Kamasi Washington - Fearless Movement

Fearless Movement

KAMASAI WASHINGTON

Released 3 May 2024

Shoto Mas Inc, Young

*****

Fearless Movement is an unabashed, cross-country, transgenerational manifestation and celebration of Black American music, pushing it forward from a deep love of its past not just in the spirit of community but in its actual presence.

From his days as a “Young Jazz Giant” and his inaugural tour with Snoop Dogg to his sprawling two prior albums, each rendered by a cast of dozens, Washington has indeed functioned as a very bright star in his artistic constellation but never the one around which everyone else revolves.

This idea has never been more clear or powerful on Washington’s records than on Fearless Movement, his first album in six years and, even at 86 minutes, his most concise statement by half since the breakthrough run that began with 2015’s The Epic. On these dozen tracks, Washington creates a playground and invites friends in to be themselves, shaping a dizzying crosshatch of ideas where George Clinton’s lounge croon sets up a trumpet-chased pep talk from rapper D Smoke, or André 3000 slips – with flutes in hand – into a nocturnal haze that feels like some futuristic Debussy state of bliss.

It is easy to imagine Washington disappearing here, his restless tone shrouded beneath the features and tizzy of ideas. And, sure, this is not a saxophone record, not something that will convince you he is a titan of the instrument itself. There are, however, many moments where he cooks, like his steady climb toward a bellow during Prologue and his ever-winding lines during The Garden Path.

Itzhak Ventura - Ein-Sof

Ein-Sof

ITZHAK VENTURA

Released 29 March 2024

Raw Tapes Records

*****

Ventura created this album to speak to the soul: “I want people to feel the connection of heart and spirit. The ney itself is a reed cut from its source; this sound reflects how we are also separated from the divine. And these songs bring us closer to unity.”

Ney (an end-blown flute that figures prominently in Arabic music.) artist, composer, producer & live performer Itzhak Ventura honed his skills growing up in the vibrant port city of Jaffa-Tel Aviv, his hometown and symbol of the resurgence of israel ethnic music.
Being widely regarded as a leading Ney player , he immersed himself in learning and exploring the Arabic, Turkish, and Persian Ney styles.
In addition to playing with The Jerusalem Orchestra East & West since its inception in 2009, he has played with renowned orchestras and musicians across a wide range of musical genres.
Ventura was inspired by some of the greatest Ney players in history and top present day musicians to create a new hybrid that combines ancient Ney flute sounds and motifs with contemporary sounds and production while maintaining the traditional sensibilities he was raised with.

With Ein Sof - which translates to 'there is no end'- Itzhak Ventura has created a mysterious, slowly-unfolding album pairing his fluttering ney with an ambient-electronic sound-bath from producer/musician Yuvi “Rejoicer” Havkin. The record, pushes the boundaries of the Raw Tapes label’s already-experimental, genre-blurring roster.

Ventura and Havkin converged in the studio in February, 2023, and immediately found their spark. The 10 tracks of Ein Sof pay homage to the classical tradition of the ney while adding electronic flourishes that help these recordings transcend anything that’s come before.

Note: SunNeverSetsOnMusic featured Venturer's previous album Aligned in our October 2022 playlist.

Charles Lloyd - The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow

The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow

CHARLES LLOYD

Released 15 March 2024

Blue Note Records

*****

In its entirety, The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow is a kick in the ass call to arms of the life and beauty still to be experienced when minds and hearts are set free to imagine other states of being.

For a long, grateful while now the music of Charles Lloyd has rippled out from that rarified space where the ego does not prevail. A pool of depth and wonder which culminates in one masterful artwork after another, for example Wild Man Dance (Blue Note, 2015) and 8: Kindred Spirits Live from the Lobero Theater (Blue Note, 2019).

Lloyd's eleventh Blue Note album, the double disc set The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow is also his first new studio recording since the 2017 sessions which brought us the darkly shimmering Vanished Gardens (Blue Note, 2018) and the finely curated Tone Poem (Blue Note, 2021).

At times these fifteen new works sound like conflict and question in their rawest forms. At times they are the sound of wisdom, reason, and comfort, but Lloyd has always had that extra tinge of humanness in his sound. It is the character of his tone. Maybe it is just that now, as the gray skies darken, the music is more reflective than forward looking as he has been since the swinging Sixties.

In its entirety, The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow - highlighted by Lloyd's lucid and dreamy "When the Sun Comes Up, Darkness Is Gone" and his look back to "Cape to Cairo" from All My Relations (ECM, 1995) - is, what the bards of olde would say, a kick in the ass call to arms of the life and beauty still to be experienced when minds and hearts are set free to imagine other states of being. Yes, that is what it is.

Find Your Flame

NUBIYAN TWIST

Released 3 May 2024

Strut Records

*****

They weave depth, sophistication, emotional heft -- political, spiritual, and personal -- discipline, and resonant emotion to create nearly limitless creative possibility in a savvy stylistic juxtaposition of neo-soul, funk, jazz, hip-hop, Afrobeat, reggae, and EDM.

Since forming at Leeds College of Music in 2011, Nubiyan Twist has expanded and refined their musical palette without succumbing to excess.

Find Your Flame is the band's fourth album. This break-laden, horn-drenched exercise in uptempo contemporary jazz-hop is as poignant as it is elegant in guitarist/composer Tom Excell's arrangement.

Find Your Flame is the Nubiyan Twist album where what they've done before, and this sophisticated new direction comes together with remarkable consistency and explosive creativity. It's the album that reveals, 14 years on, that Nubiyan Twist is no longer a good band; they're a great one.

Isaiah Collier & The Chosen Few - The Almighty

The Almighty

ISAIAH COLLIER & THE CHOSEN FEW

Released 26 April 2024

Division 81 Records

****-

It’s thrilling, reflective, spellbinding music that never loses its sense of groove. There’s no way listeners cannot feel the magnetism of Collier’s generous, glowing spirit.

Isaiah Collier is a multi-instrumentalist blazing out of Chicago. About to turn 26, Collier’s ascension into the upper-echelon jazz world is happening now. His 2021 release, Cosmic Transitions (Division 81), received a 5-star review in DownBeat. He was named Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist in last year’s DownBeat Critics Poll. Live shows with his band The Chosen Few, and other incarnations, simply astound. He grew up taking the best from the wide span of music available in Chicago, developing his skills through the Jazz Institute of Chicago and the Chicago High School for the Performing Arts as well as taking in the wisdom of members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). He went on to study at the Brubeck Institute. He learned well and is now an artist in full bloom as evidenced on his latest recording, The Almighty (Division 81).

There is so much to take in with this record. There’s a deep sense of the spirituality and fire of Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders.

In addition to the members of his amazing group the Chosen Few - Michael Shekwoaga Ode on drums, Julian Davis Reid on piano and Jeremiah Hunt on bass - Collier adds a group he calls The Celestials consisting of strings, a horn section and an expanded rhythm section to reach shamanistic heights, calling out to The Almighty.

Terrace Martin - Grounded (EP)

Grounded (EP)

TERRACE MARTIN

Released 17 May 2024

Lowly O'Connor

*****

Martin's music is mellow at the best of times, but the suite of songs he has assembled for "Grounded" is something else entirely.

Terrace Jamahl Martin (born December 28, 1978) is an American musician, rapper, singer, and record producer, perhaps best known for producing records for several prominent artists including Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, the Game, Busta Rhymes, Stevie Wonder, Charlie Wilson, Raphael Saadiq and YG, among others. Martin is a multi-instrumentalist whose music production embodies funk, jazz, classical and soul.

However Martin has forged a prolific career in his own right, with many albums featured by SunNeverSetsOnMusic over recent years alone:

Enigmatic Society (with Dinner Party, released 14 April 2023), The Near North Side (with Calvin Keys, released 17 November 2023), sneek by (with Gallant, sneek, released 17 November 2023), Ornamental ( a  Holiday Album, released 1 December 2023), Dinner Party (with Dinner Party, released 10 July 2020).

Fully instrumental, the album-length "EP" has all the elements of Eno-like ambient music, but the distinguishing feature here is that Martin has given it discernable form in a way that few albums of its kind have enjoyed.  Although each piece maintains an enveloping, restful mood typical of the genre, Martin  manages to amplify the contours of each piece and in so doing generates an attention-holding range of musical options that allows him to change pace and intensity from song to song. The music follows a sequence and narrative that is suggested by descriptive titles for each piece.

The Copeland-inspired synths of the opening track "Balance" establish an ominous tone of increasing intensity that swells and ebbs and is eventually released. "Focus"sequences delicate keyboards, tonal sounds that carry the suggestion of distant harmonious voices, to conjure a period of meditative calm.

This calm is abruptly transformed by "Release", the centrepiece of the album (in placement and duration) as its multi-layered synths and horns establish a celestial, dream-like mood worthy of a medieval choir. The underlying buzzing bass notes and other distortions add a mysterious, other-worldly quality and is followed by "Restore", a further mix of sombre ethereal church organ and electronic distortion.

The penultimate track "Reflect" provides relief - still sombre, but just a little "cleaner" in tone and somewhat sweeter in its voice than its immediate predecessors.

Finally, "Time" draws this remarkable suite to a close. At first its intensity surprises as the music is faster and more complex than anything that has preceded it. It swells behind a fuzzed electric guitar motif and having reached a critical density, falls away to nothing except the thud of a single beat. But this is a false ending and the suite is refreshed by a mix of harpsichords, water washes and tonal synths.

Yaya Bey - Ten Fold

Ten Fold

YAYA BEY

Released 10 May 2024

Big Dada

*****

‘Ten Fold’, like the best journeying album, takes you along for the ride whilst serenading your anguish.

With the retro-conscious feel of Yaya Bey's new album, ‘Ten Fold’, the artist communicates to fellow sapped hearts in a language that’s both familiar and earthy.

‘Ten Fold’, returns Bey to the mire of malfunctioning adulthood. It is as interior as it is fraught with existential concern; coloured by the death knell of past selves, relationships and systemic degradation.

Bey documents grief in its acutest phase early on (namely the loss of her father, Ayub Bey, Grand Daddy IU of New York rap collective the Juice Crew), and explores how the apparition of loss intersects with labour.

Bey never languishes in the darker recesses of her mind for too long. ‘Ten Fold’ finds Bey in a creatively fertile space, wading, feeling and moving through the tendrils of her pain – her aphoristic storytelling counterbalanced by a luminous production cohort that includes Karriem Riggins, Jay Daniel, Exaktly and Boston Chery. Bey extols solidarity through the rawness of her experience, whilst leaning into the communion that comes with experiencing and creating music in the presence of others.

On ‘Ten Fold’, Bey resists the overt commercial moment her arc as an artist might warrant at this point in her career. Instead the collection maintains the ambling, unprocessed feel of ‘Remember Your North Star’, Bey’s journey of self-discovery scaffolded by blithe sonic choices. These songs aren’t pretentiously long or even particularly ornate, but it doesn’t need to be. ‘Ten Fold’ continues the documentation of Yaya Bey as a fallible figure, a work-in-progress. Bey muses on the passage of time; the stickiness and elusiveness of the present moment, and the promise that the sun will set on an uncertain future. Bey channels the destabilising loss of her father and its attendant grief into something transcendent yet eminently relatable.

Ledisi - Good Life

Good Life

LEDISI

Released 1 March 2024

Listen Back Entertainment

*****

As usual, Ledisi co-composes everything, and her smart choices for new collaborators result in an album that further strengthens her body of work.

Ledisi switches it up a little for Good Life, her 11th album and first set of original material in four years. Rex Rideout, her chief partner dating back to third full-length Lost & Found, is still very much involved, working here on roughly half of the songs, while she enlists many additional writers, producers, and players, from Marsha Ambrosius and Tish Hyman to Isaiah Sharkey, Burniss Travis, and Cory Henry.

Much of what transpires is suited for a grade-A playlist of modern quiet storm.

She duets with Kenny Lattimore and joins the usually frisky jazz-funk band Butcher Brown for "Quality Time," is the LP's most instrumentally spare and restrained (if still stimulating) moment.

The finale is essentially a sequel to Deniece Williams' "Free," both musically and lyrically, if a declaration of recovery written after the first-person protagonist lost herself. Gazing into a mirror with a lilt in her voice, Ledisi sounds invigorated and untroubled as she realizes that she's her former self again. It's likely no coincidence that the glamorous cover of Good Life wouldn't be out of place beside those of Williams' early albums.

Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown

Lives Outgrown

BETH GIBBONS

Released 17 May 2024

Domino Recording Co Ltd

*****

Beth Gibbons’s first official solo effort, Lives Outgrown, picks up where Portishead’s 2008 album, Third, left off, with detail-rich orchestral chamber pop backing a stunning exploration of aging and grief.

The singer’s existential fears about time’s creep and holding onto once-vibrant emotions and connections is as captivating as it is devastating.

Across the album’s 10 songs, Gibbons swims against life’s currents. Musically and thematically, she actively resists the dulling of sensation that, she suggests, comes with age: “I used to feel the feelings,” she sings on the unsettling “Burden of Life.”

That tension is palpable throughout Lives Outgrown. Gibbons’s feelings about mortality—“Gone too far to rewind…We all know what’s coming,” she laments on “Rewind”—are accompanied by instruments that often seem to be at war with one another. The drums are frequently arrhythmic and asynchronous, as on “Burden of Life” and “Tell Me Who You Are Today.”
Lives Outgrown is a despairing portrait of growing old, dotted with bursts of hope and still-fiery conviction. Occasionally, joy bubbles up to the surface and Gibbons is able to resuscitate the vitality of her youth.

Lives Outgrown presents an artist whose capabilities have been sharply honed, with the skill to convey all of life’s complicated, thorny emotions.

Andrew Bird, Alan Hampton, Ted Poor - Sunday Morning Put-On

Sunday Morning Put-On

ANDREW BIRD, ALAN HAMPTON, TED POOR

Released 16 May 2024

Wegawam Music, Loma Vista

****-

If anything, these songs are almost too close to the originals to truly flourish in typical Birdian style, but that’s a minor quibble. This album is still a perfect combination of respect and reinvention, and another string to Andrew Bird’s truly magnificent and inimitable bow.

There’s always been something classic about Andrew Bird’s music. There were the pre-war jazz/swing-inspired compositions of his early days leading his band Bowl of Fire, which followed on directly from his involvement with Chapel Hill’s jazz revivalists Squirrel Nut Zippers.

His solo records after disbanding that outfit toned down the jazz elements and veered instead into something more grandiloquent, refined, and sophisticated—classically trained pop songs infused with eccentric experimentation courtesy of his whistling and violin (which he plucks and plays like a guitar in addition to using it in the more traditional method), both of which assumed a more central role in his increasingly idiosyncratic compositions.

Along the way, Bird’s reputation as an intellectual and cerebral songwriter - perhaps a musician’s musician’s musician - grew in tandem with his profile. Though his music has always felt too intelligent for true mainstream success, he nevertheless broke into its fringes, and 2012’s Break It Yourself even hit the #10 spot on the Billboard 200.

Yet his new collection Sunday Morning Put-On is a return to his jazzy roots. On it, Bird’s trio - rounded out by Ted Poor on drums and Alan Hampton on bass, with additional guitar and piano from Jeff Parker and Larry Goldings - revisits classic jazz songs by the likes of Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Rodgers and Hart, and more. At face value, it’s more accessible and less erudite than much of his solo work, but these are far from mundane Connick Jr. - esque reinterpretations.

Take “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” a 1944 jazz standard popularized by Frank Sinatra and, later, Chet Baker. The interpretation here retains the soul of those versions, but also infuses it with Bird’s trademark insouciance and peculiarity, in no small part thanks to his violin playing and whistling. His vocals throughout this album recall those of Baker, as it happens - mild and plaintive and restrained, albeit without the drug-addled tragedy that defined (and probably inspired) Baker’s sorrowful timbre. Still, “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” “I Cover the Waterfront,” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” are all executed with his trademark precision, poise, and, at times, quirkiness.

Jessica Pratt - Here In The Pitch

Here In The Pitch

JESSICA PRATT

Released 3 May 2024

City Slang

****-

Her songs are still wounded and far away, but the expanded instrumentation gives them a prismatic glow and makes for one of the most fascinating and repeatable sets from an artist who was already in a class by herself.

Up to this point, Jessica Pratt's gorgeous songs were almost translucent, their thin layers of nylon-string guitar, occasional piano, and her whispered vocals all stacked on each other like faded, see-through filmstrips. Her third album, 2019's Quiet Signs, was her most subdued effort yet, its songs powerful and engrossing but also seeming like they might float away completely if they weren't focused on tightly enough.

Pratt deepens both her captivating songwriting style and otherworldly presence while expanding her sound in multiple dimensions on her fourth record, Here in the Pitch. Where distant guitars have been the main accompaniment for much of her work before this, opening track "Life Is" announces a change by starting with the crack of reverb-laden drums and gradually bringing in bass guitar, string-like keys, and other ephemeral sounds. The arrangement is panoramic when compared to Pratt's usual sparseness, with clear nods to '60s orchestral pop productions from the Beach Boys, Love, the Walker Brothers, and the like.

Indeed, overt references to Pet Sounds come up repeatedly, in the bassy woodwind asides of "Better Hate," the seashell percussion and beachy organ of "Nowhere It Was," the accordion bellows of "By Hook or by Crook," and several other instances. Pratt also brings in a mercurial kind of bossa nova flare akin to Astrud Gilberto's saddest songs, the lonely longing of the Zombies, and the straightforward pop structure of '60s hitmakers like Sandie Shaw or Petula Clark. Even though these influences are displayed freely, that's not to say Here in the Pitch is mere re-creation of a certain sect of sunshine pop. Pratt's voice, songwriting turns, and distinctive melancholy all remain singularly her own, and the fuller, more excitable arrangements only shine light on her talent from new angles. While her material before this was insular, these songs find Pratt opening up her private sound world just enough to let a glimpse of its depth come through.

Jose James - 1978

1978

JOSE JAMES

Released 5 April 2024

Rainbow Blonde Records

****-

Just as his 2023 album On & On wasn't a straightforward Erykah Badu tribute, José James' 2024 follow-up, 1978, isn't merely a throwback to the year of the singer's birth.

In essence, a little over half of the set achieves release on the dancefloor and in the bedroom, and the remainder is more reflective and sonically adventurous. Sensuality fuels the first side and seeps into the second side, beginning with a pair of caressing ballads frictionized by Jharis Yokley's twists on Dilla-style drunken drums. The next two songs, rhapsodic, slick, and as seductive as what precedes them, evoke prime Heatwave and Off the Wall-era Michael Jackson -- from Chad Selph's driving low-end synthesizer to Marcus Machado's wriggling rhythm guitar -- distinguished by James' buttery vocals and casual swagger. "Black Orpheus (Don't Look Back)" reverts to ballad mode with a philosophical look at companionship. James cited Leon Ware as an inspiration for the album, and the low-profile Motown legend's work, particularly on Marvin Gaye's I Want You and his own Musical Massage -- landmarks of quiet storm eroticism issued months apart in 1976 -- is especially felt in the love ballads. 1978's sound and vision open up with "Dark Side of the Sun" ("a prayer for broken-hearted people") and "Place of Worship," global gospel-folk fusions with respective featured appearances from stern Congolese-Belgian rapper Baloji and comforting Brazilian singer/songwriter Xênia França. The last two songs are among James' heaviest. Backed by only piano and strings, he delivers a poised outpouring of grief on "For Trayvon," masterfully switching in one early line from solemn baritone to despairing falsetto, and staying in the latter range until fadeout. James then returns to his hometown of Minneapolis for "38th & Chicago," the site of George Floyd's murder. The energy increases for this second song written in response to a racist killing. It's a rolling groove that, in a way, reimagines Marvin Gaye's What's Going On with Ware involved to apply some Afro-Brazilian influence. The breeziness is certainly at odds with James' feelings of terror, anger, and frustration, but its steady propulsion, combined with a burning Machado solo and a Pedrito Martínez conga break, signify resolve, defiance, and power.

Bab L' Bluz - Swaken

Swaken

BAB L' BLUZ

Released 10 May 2024

Real World Records

****-

This is ancient-to-future music, rooted as much in psychedelic blues, funk and rock as in the trancey, propulsive rhythms of northern Africa's Maghreb: Gnawa, Amazigh, Hassani and Houara music.

Created in Marrakech in 2018, Bab L' Bluz comprises

Yousra Mansour (lead vocal, electric awisha, electric mandol, electric guembri, qraqeb, electric ribab, bendir, tbal, taarija),

Brice Bottin (electric guembri, guitar, banjo, peul flûte, keyboards, qraqeb, bendir, cowbell, bongos, taarija, dub siren, gong, backing vocals)

Ibrahim Terkemani (drums, qraqeb, bendir, backing vocals)

Jérôme Bartolome (qraqeb, cowbell, backing vocals)

Mehdi Chaib (ney, kawala, zorna)

The group was born from the dream of propelling guembri (the Gnawa's guitar-like instrument) on the international music scene of contemporary music.

"Swaken" is the bands sophomore album, which follows stunning their 2020 debut "Nayda!".

Bab L' Bluz's output is rooted in the popular street music known as Chaabi, in which the word 'swaken' means to visit another dimension, as well as the space in which two dimensions overlap.

Losing yourself to find yourself is a central tenet of Swaken, an album whose warm analogue sound nods to such '70s rock icons as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Nass El Ghiwane - Morocco's very own Rolling Stones, social justice warriors who mixed western rock and folk with a trance aesthetic influenced - as is that of Bab L' Bluz - by Gnawa lilas, the all-night healing rituals intended for sacred spirit possession.

Mdou Moctar - Funeral For Justice

Funeral For Justice

MDOU MOCTAR

Released 3 May 2024

Matador Records

****-

From the blood dripping off of the crows on its album cover to the screeching guitars that open its first song, it’s the proud sound of rebellion, transposed from Tamasheq into a language that refuses to be misinterpreted.

Lying landlocked some 2,000 km. southeast of Morocco, Niger is the homeland of charismatic Tuareg guitarist Mdou Moctar, whose 2019 breakout Afrique Victime. This is an overtly political album throughout, that addresses the injustices extant in a country formerly occupied by France where, uranium extraction comprises almost its entire export product, with virtually none of the profit remaining in Niger. Instead, France still controls most of the country’s supply, using the minerals to power a third of its domestic electricity while almost 90 percent of Nigerien citizens are left without access to power. And though France finally relinquished all military bases in Niger following a 2023 military coup, many of its mines remain active to this day, leaking radon into the water supply of surrounding towns.

For Moctar, music is inextricably linked with political expression: the assouf or “desert blues” Tuareg musical lineage from which Moctar partially derives his style has always been a way of engendering unity and documenting sociopolitical upheaval. Moctar’s sentiments were clear on his 2021 album Afrique Victime: “Africa is a victim of so many crimes/If we stay silent it will be the end of us.”

But the urgency of his message could be overlooked if all the listener chooses to hear is an uptempo guitar groove.

Reflections of Purple Sun

EABS

Released 10 May 2024

EABS & Astigmatic Records

****-

EABS blend elements of soul, funk, hip-hop and electro with a fresh approach to composition, all the while seeking to breathe fire into the jazz - bringing back its former glory ignoring clichés, exploring and experimenting

From Wrocław, Poland, EABS embodies an innovative approach to jazz through the prism of hip-hop, on which these musicians were brought up.

2023 was a breakthrough year for EABS in many ways. It was all thanks to the well received, fully self-produced album entitled In Search of a Better Tomorrow, recorded in collaboration with the Pakistani band Jaubi. The record provided the opportunity to tour in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and China. It was praised by media outlets such as Le Monde, L'Echo, Politis, Stern, Bandcamp and Gazeta Wyborcza, while The Guardian included the release in its 'The Best Global Albums of 2023'. EABS' forthcoming sixth album is a return to their roots – literally and figuratively. It is an in-depth study on rhythm, which materialised in the form of the album titled Reflections of Purple Sun.

The back to the roots part not only manifests itself in the lack of guest instrumentalists, but also in a renewed focus on the history of Polish jazz. The band's debut album Repetitions... was dedicated to Krzysztof Komeda. This time, the band picked up the entire Purple Sun album, which Tomasz Stańko recorded half a century ago.

This is ancient-to-future music, rooted as much in psychedelic blues, funk and rock as in the trancey, propulsive rhythms of northern Africa's Maghreb: Gnawa, Amazigh, Hassani and Houara music.

Sitting at the heart of Melbourne’s burgeoning instrumental soul movement, Karate Boogaloo (Henry Jenkins, Hudson Whitlock, Callum Riley, and Darvid Thor) have been playing music together since their playground days. Meeting as high school preteens, these four friends explored the teachings of the great small combo instrumental bands à la Booker T & The MG’s and The Meters.

Their latest album, Hold Your Horses, is their first album of all originals since "Carn The Boogers" and follows 2021 release "KB's Mixtape No. 3"

What’s particularly interesting about the Boogers album is that it was recorded back in 2017, then set aside until College of Knowledge Records convinced Karate Boogaloo to release it in 2020. So there has really been seven years between albums, and Hold Your Horses showcases the group’s progression.

Recorded and mixed by bassist Henry Jenkins, the album spotlights a new maturity in Karate Boogaloo’s distinct interpretation of instrumental funk and is a fantastic listen from beginning to end.

The band’s style is rooted in instrumental funk, drawing influences from the deep funk of the late ’60s and early ’70s, European film music, and the new wave of instrumental soul. Their sound is characterized by a restrained instrumental approach consisting of drums, guitar, bass, and organ, creating a consistent and distinct tone throughout the album.

Kenny Garrett, Svoy - Who Killed AI?

Who Killed AI

KENNY GARRETT, SVOY

Released 13 April 2024

Mack Avenue Records

****-

This is Garrett's first all-electronic album and finds him working in collaboration with electronic producer/instrumentalist Mikhail Tarasov (aka Svoy), a former student at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, who brings both jazz and classical influences.

Alto and soprano saxophonist Kenny Garrett (born Detroit, 1960) is an explorer. He’s constantly seeking new situations, new sources of inspiration, and new ways to expand the boundaries of his own musical conception.
Many people know Garrett as Miles Davis’ last saxophonist. He joined the trumpeter’s band in 1987 and remained with him until Davis’ death in 1991. And before joining Davis, he’d played with Woody Shaw, Art Blakey, and been a member of a “young lions”-style group assembled by Blue Note Records called Out Of The Blue. In the ’90s, he was part of Guru’s Jazzmatazz project and played on Q-Tip’s album Kamaal The Abstract. He even appeared on Santana’s live album All That I Am, soloing on a medley of “Evil Ways” and John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme.”
Garrett’s musical adventurism has frequently drawn him to the music of countries and cultures other than his own - Israel, the Middle East, Greece, Japan, Korea, Guadeloupe, and Africa.

While Garrett is at his core a hard-swinging bebop player from Detroit who got his start as a teenager in the Duke Ellington Orchestra, he’s recorded and performed in so many different contexts over the last 40 years that he’s able to adapt to almost anything. He’s chameleonic, yet recognizable, and he maintains that balance by always asking what the person hiring him wants from him.

So it is all the more remarkable that Garrett’s new album is a departure even for such an adventurous musical traveler. Who Killed AI? is entirely electronic; the tracks were created by producer Svoy (pronounced “Savoy”) using Logic and synthesizers, and Garrett solos over them. To be clear, the album wasn’t made with AI. Its title seems to conflate AI with electronic music, or else it’s a gauntlet throwdown along the lines of “Let’s see AI do this.”

At times, Who Killed AI? has the feel of Miles Davis’ final studio recording, Doo-Bop, on which he played over tracks created by Easy Mo Bee and other hip-hop producers, but at other times the beats are hard, almost industrial. The synths are densely layered, shifting from almost ambient sound washes and mournful melodies to deep bass throbs and hard techno riffs. There are breakbeats and 4/4 thump. On “Miles Running Down AI,” the synths are so grimy they sound like the organ stabs and funk guitars of 1970s Davis tracks like “Rated X” and “Black Satin,” and on “Divergence Tu-Dah,” Garrett plays a soprano sax solo through so many effects it sounds like a blues-rock guitar, while also adding robotic, feminine vocals.

He cites Pharoah Sanders’ final album as an inspiration. “[Svoy] did a great job allowing that space for me to kind of create. And that’s what I’ve been trying to do for years. I’m still waiting to collaborate with other people [who were] writing some music with me in mind, you know, and let’s see what happens. Pharaoh did a record like that with Floating Points; I would love to have done something like that, but a lot of times people don’t know what you can do, so they never would call you for things like that. But I hope after this situation, people will be open to trying — ‘Oh, let me call Kenny Garrett. We could try something here or try something there.’ I mean, I’m just really trying to continue to grow as a musician and try things, you know?”

Jordan Rakei - The Loop

The Loop

JORDAN RAKEI

Released 10 May 2024

Decca

****-

London-based, Australian-raised singer Jordan Rakei has spent the past decade or so steadily growing, both in popularity and quality. That growth continues in 2024, as his fifth album The Loop sees him in better touch than ever.

Rakei's voice has always been a treasure, and he sounds both at his most relaxed and most confident here. The deep digging he started on 2021's What We Call Life continues here, as the artist navigates both his own emotions and the world around him.

His often-introspective explorations help lend a sense of intimacy to the record, ensuring its stunning sound, which is far more opulent than anything from Rakei's past, doesn't dull the emotional impact of these songs.

The Loop is packed with dusty beats, sleek orchestral swells, and deft yet unimposing guitar lines. Its production owes a fair bit to 70s funk, but much like how golden age hip hop gave new life to old records, Rakei's voice makes a classic artform feel current and vital.

"I wanted to get back to why I fell in love with music in the first place," he explained in a statement.

"I found myself listening to my favourite artists again and I wanted to make an ambitious record that was centred around my vocal. I had a no-judgement approach when it came to production and songwriting choices."

That means a fairly broad remit when it comes to the music, but Rakei's voice ensures every one of its grand sounding tracks works in symbiosis.

It's not entirely fair to say this is Rakei at his most ambitious – there are four other albums that prove he's an artist that has always looked to push into interesting new musical spaces – but it's his most accomplished work to date.

JASMINE MYRA

Released 3 May 2024

Gondwana Records

****-

Elevating, uplifting and beautifully arranged. Jasmine Myra's sophomore album Rising builds on the success of her breakthrough album Horizons to deliver a major statement from one of UK Jazz's rising stars.

Jasmine Myra is a saxophonist, composer and band leader, based in Leeds.

Produced by Matthew Halsall and mixed by Greg Freeman (Hania Rani, Matthew Halsall, Portico Quartet), Rising delivers a confident and vibrant follow up that joins the musical dots between Myra’s influences Kenny Wheeler, Bonobo and Shabaka Hutchings while delivering something unique, beautiful and profound.

"Much like my first album, Rising is a reflection of a period of my life. It is a continuation from Horizons, which was all about my experience during lockdown, and entailed overcoming my struggles with mental health. Following on from that experience, I set out to continue building my self-confidence".

Part of the bustling, creative, cross-genre music scene in the city she has surrounded herself with some of the best young talent in the north of England. Rising features the same core of musicians as Myra’s debut album Horizons with guitarist Ben Haskins, drummer George Hall pianist Jasper Green, harpist Alice Roberts (who both also perform with Matthew Halsall) and bassist Sam Quintana who collectively bring a deft understating of the subtle textures of Myra’s music and perform with a collective empathy and drive that really pushes the music on a radiant journey. And a string quartet add gently elevating textures to Still Waters, Knowingness, From Embers and How Tall The Mountains

Milan Ring - Mangos

Mangos

MILAN RING

Released 13 April 2024

Astral People Recordings

****-

It's another accomplished body of work from an artist who's deserving of much wider recognition and acclaim.

Australian artist Milan Ring is a certified polymath. A seasoned producer, songwriter, and music director who sings and slays on the guitar, she's a respected figure in Sydney/Eora's local R&B scene.

Her impressive credits includes collaborations with Questlove, Ta-ku, Sampa The Great, B Wise, Winston Surfshirt, and an LA studio session with Chance The Rapper's band The Social Experiment and SZA (who she covered for Like A Version).

That rap sheet is a solid indication of the quality and sound of Milan Ring's own solo work, beginning with her 2021 debut album I'm Feeling Hopeful.

After showcasing the breadth of her talent and heritage on that too-good-to-ignore release, Milan Ring continues her artistic journey with her second accomplished album.
Mangos is every bit as juicy and summery as that title suggests. Like its predecessor, it's ripe with world-class R&B, sensual neo-soul and funkified grooves that's as good as any coming out of this country.

Inspired by a summer fling, and the deeper philosophical digging that romance prompted, the album encompasses music that organically glides between poignant and playful.
If there's a blemish to the otherwise spotless Mangos it's that there's simply not enough of it to savour (it's 10 songs come and go in just 31 minutes).

But, nothing on the record feels especially underdeveloped, quite the opposite – you can feel the care and craft put into it. But by the time you emerge from this immersive listening experience, you'll only be satisfied with diving back in and soaking in the details again.

Wadada Leo Smith, Amina Claudine Myers - Central Park's Mosaic of Reservoir, Lake, Paths and Gardens

Central Park's Mosaic of Reservoir, Lake, Paths and Gardens

WADADA LEO SMITH,

AMINA CLAUDINE MYERS

Released 10 May 2024

Red Hook

****-

Smith composed six of the seven pieces on Central Park’s Mosaics of Reservoir, Lake, Paths and Gardens, and he’s joined by pianist and AACM cohort Amina Claudine Myers, who completed the sessions with no prior rehearsal.

Central Park sits like a monster’s footprint in the middle of Manhattan, girdled with towers, lush and verdant but hard to mistake for the wilderness. Such an imposing work of infrastructure appeals to Wadada Leo Smith. The great AACM trumpeter and composer’s releases since 2012’s Ten Freedom Summers encompass an alternative map of America, lovingly sketching in its Great Lakes and National Parks while honoring its civil rights leaders, artistic geniuses, and the millions displaced and killed in its creation. Smith composed six of the seven pieces on Central Park’s Mosaics of Reservoir, Lake, Paths and Gardens, and he’s joined by pianist and AACM cohort Amina Claudine Myers, who completed the sessions with no prior rehearsal.

Smith describes Central Park as his favorite park in the world, but from the first minor-key piano notes on “Conservatory Gardens,” it’s clear that Mosaics is about more than bucolic landscapes.

The tone is stately and almost elegiac throughout, as if a grand, seismic, and vaguely frightening event is taking place on a glacial timescale.

In its exploration of a relatively small part of NYC as a microcosm of its complexities, Smith and Myers’ album is spiritual kin to Loren Connors’ stunning solo guitar albums Hell’s Kitchen Park and 9th Avenue, which channeled the vanishing Irish-American history of the gentrifying Manhattan neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. Like those albums, Mosaics is short, just 36 minutes, more than a quarter of them occupied by “Conservatory Gardens.” But it doesn’t feel small, even when compared to Smith’s almost improbably ambitious epics like the four-and-a-half-hour Pulitzer nominee Ten Freedom Summers. Its borders seem to extend beyond its confines, as if there’s a theoretical piece for every meadow and lake in Central Park and this is just a small leakage from a vast parallel universe rendered through music.

Songs & Symphoniques

- The Music of Moond

MOONDOG, GHOST TRAIN ORCHESTRA, KRONOS QUARTET

Released 29 September 2023

Cantaloupe Music

****-

To their credit, Ghost Train Orchestra and their collaborators don’t try to mimic Moondog’s irreplaceable alchemy, instead using his templates as foundations or expansion points.

Louis Hardin, aka Moondog, died in 1999, at the age of 83, just as his eccentric music – a mix of composed classical, improvised jazz, whimsical art-song, field recording and Native American ritual, was being rediscovered.

For a blind midcentury street performer who dressed in outlandish Viking attire and invented his own instruments, his work was less obscure than you’d think – he released albums on labels such as Decca, Prestige and Columbia, and even cut a disc with Julie Andrews. He lived with Philip Glass for a while, and inspired the name of legendary early rock DJ Alan Freed’s radio show … and won a lawsuit to prove it.

Yet despite his idiosyncratic sound and unreal story, Moondog has never risen above cult status.

Working with avant-garde-classical standard-bearers Kronos Quartet and an impressively motley group of singers, Ghost Train Orchestra, a chamber group dedicated to forgotten and esoteric jazz subgenres, has paid tribute to and reinvigorated Moondog’s singular body of work.

Bedouin Burger, Zeid Hamdan, Lynn Adib - Ma Li Beit

Ma Li Beit

BEDOUIN BURGER, ZEID HAMDAN, LYNN ADIB

Released 18 May 2024

Pop Arabia

****-

Ever since they got together a couple of years ago, Lynn and Zeid have been turning heads with their extensively eclectic singles, electronically reviving classic Arabic poetry and offering a contemporary rendition of traditional Levantine music.

Bedouin Burger – the indie-pop act made up of acclaimed Lebanese producer and multi-instrumentalist Zeid Hamdan, as well as Syrian songstress and composer Lynn Adib – are once again taking their radically different sound to a new realm, offering a futuristic taste of Arabic folk music in their latest album, ‘Ma Li Beit’.

A colourful fusion of classic Arab maqam, Levantine and Yemeni folk rhythms with pulsating, and at times abrasive, electronic beats, the album is yet another playful exploratory effort inspired by the rich nomadic culture of the Arabian peninsula and the Levantine region.

Encompassing 12 tracks, the album, true to its moniker which literally translates to ‘I don’t have a home’, tackles universal themes of exile, homesickness and nostalgia. With Zeid’s spaced-out percussions, analog synths, and emotive guitar notes, peaking and retreating around Lynn’s soul-stirring vocals and celestial sprinkles of poetry, the album serves as an assuring caress to stranded souls longing for a place to call ‘home’.

Throughout the entirety of the album, Lynn beautifully showcases various singing styles from Andulasian Muwashah to entrancing bedouin ballads and lullabies, in a variety of Arabic dialects, including her native Damascene. The album’s intro, ‘HARIR’ - a synergy of Hamdan’s lush strings and Lynn’s mournful lyricism - opens with the singer humming a bittersweet ballad, celebrating the nomadic culture of her Arab heritage. Meanwhile, ‘Dabkeh’, which is more of Hamdan's distinct production style, is a thrilling electro hoedown pairing Arabic percussion and the flutters of the flute with rampaging synths.

Recorded between Paris, where the duo currently reside, and Beirut, the 12-track album also features Lebanese rapper Bu Nasser Touffar on the toned-down track ‘Esha’, along with a hypnotic remix of the duo’s minimalistic electro-tarab hit ‘Taht El Wared’ by Senegali musician, T.I.E.

Yosef-Gutman Levitt, Lionel Loueke - Soul Song

Soul Song

YOSEF-GUTMAN LEVITT, LIONEL LOUEKE

Released 23 June 2023

Yosef-Gutman Levitt & Lionel Loueke

****-

The album reflects a mutual love of music played from the heart, with melodies clearly and lyrically expressed.

When South African-born bassist Yosef-Gutman Levitt made the journey to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music, he encountered a number of like minded souls there. One of them, a guitarist originally from the West African nation of Benin, had come to Berklee from Paris. His name: Lionel Loueke. After moving to New York, the two continued to nourish their musical bond on a weekly gig in Brooklyn.

Their paths diverged: Loueke became one of the most sought-after musicians of his time, signing to Blue Note and joining the bands of Terence Blanchard and Herbie Hancock, among others.

Levitt left the music business, got married, started a family, found success as a tech entrepreneur, and moved to Jerusalem in 2009 following a spiritual rebirth. By 2018, he returned to music and began to refine a distinctive voice on the five-string acoustic bass guitar, his musical calling card, heard to great effect on his debut trio album Upside Down Mountain.

Reuniting after many years, Levitt is excited to share his new album with Loueke, Soul Song, available on his recently launched label of the same name.

Pianist Omri Mor and drummer Ofri Nehemya complete the marvelous quartet lineup. The tracks are primarily Levitt originals cowritten and arranged with producer Gilad Ronen. Levitt plays mainly upright bass, preferring to accompany Loueke rather than attempt to share the lead melodic role. “Lionel is bringing himself to the music, he’s coming as a player,” Levitt explains. And what you give a player like Loueke is all the room he wants.

Even if its intentions are clear, Transcodex does not reveal all its secrets right away. It’s up to you to find the solution, the key, the Transcodex yourself. It must be revisited over and over again for its beauty to be fully revealed.

Turning more towards pop than in their beginnings, this fourth record by the enigmatic trio of Jac Berrocal, David Fenech and Vincent Epplay follows the footsteps of their previous (2021) album, Exterior Lux.

The trio seems limitless: they experiment with a large variety of styles (pop, dub, electronica, dark jazz), always colored by their very own touch.

Jac Berrocal’s trumpet, richer than ever, plays over an ever-changing sonic landscape engineered by the duet of musicians/producers Vincent Epplay and David Fenech.

For this album, they invited two amazing musicians.

Jah Wobble (founding member of Public Image Ltd and collaborator of African Head Charge, Brian Eno, Holger Czukay, Jaki Liebezeit, Evan Parker, Sinéad O'Connor) plays deep bass lines on two tracks.

Jean-Hervé Peron (founding member of the German band Faust, and who recorded with Tony Conrad, Nurse With Wound, Pascal Comelade) brings his prowess to two tracks as well. Peron writes lyrics in French, German and Russian — and plays the French Horn like no one else.

Little Feat - Sam's Place

Sam's Place

LITTLE FEAT

Released 17 May 2024

Hot Tomato Productions

****-

"Sam's Place" marks the band’s first new studio album in 12 years, first-ever blues album and the first one to feature linchpin conga player Sam Clayton on lead vocals on every song.

Little Feat, one of rock’s signature and most acclaimed bands, are inviting everyone to join them over at "Sam's Place".

The 2024 Little Feat line-up comprises:

Bill Payne - Keyboards and Vocals;

Sam Clayton - Percussion and Vocals;

Fred Tackett - Guitars and Vocals,

Kenny Gradney - Bass;

Scott Sharrard - Guitars and Vocals;

and Tony Leone - drums and vocals.

Their individual musical chops and collective chemistry light up in these nine new tracks, which was waxed at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, TN (August 2023), except for “Got My Mojo Working (Live),” recorded live at the Boulder Theatre in Boulder, CO (December 17, 2022).

This is the first Little Feat album recorded with new members Sharrard and Leone.

The band’s longtime friend, the beloved Bonnie Raitt, provides vocals on the Muddy Waters gem “Long Distance Call,” a duet with Sam, and the album’s other special guests are Michael “Bull” LoBue on harmonica, Marc Franklin on trumpet, and Art Edmaiston on saxophone on select songs.

Little Feat emerged from the pandemic with their sense of humor, chops, and collective joy in playing intact—and their creativity has been renewed with SAM’S PLACE. The idea for the album started with Bill, but the whole band jumped in. They started working on songs at sound checks. Sam, Scott and Fred wrote a new song, “Milk Man.” Visiting backstage at a Feat show, Bonnie Raitt suggested the Howlin’ Wolf tune “You Will Be Mine.” Scott suggested “Why People Like That,” a Bobby Charles tune. Sam chose the Willy Dixon-penned “Don’t Go No Further,” a deep Muddy track. And they included a live version of “Got My Mojo Working.”

The band builds on a deep, over 50-year history. Little Feat used a combination of elite musicianship and brilliant, idiosyncratic songwriting to create a repertoire that transcends all boundaries. California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country and rockabilly mixed with New Orleans swamp boogie led to a powerful sound that has kept the audience dancing for decades. Their groove – in songs like “Dixie Chicken,” “Spanish Moon,” “Fat Man in the Bathtub,” and “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” is a continuous thread of excellence that embraces the qualities of exploration that make up Little Feat, its music, while honoring their brothers that began this journey decades ago: Lowell George, Richie Hayward, and Paul Barrere. Their legacy is honest and durable with no end in sight. It has always been about the songs and musicianship.

Daniel Lanois - Player, Piano

Player, Piano

DANIEL LANOIS

Released 23 September 2022

Ontario / Modern Recordings

****-

Musically, this is one of the most vulnerable collections Lanois has ever made and quite endearing in its sweetness.

Practically since his first solo release -- 1989's marvelous Acadie -- Daniel Lanois has had the freedom to pursue whatever muse stirs his imagination. His status as an iconic producer remains unrivaled, though it often overshadows a rich personal discography that has been reliably eclectic and occasionally quite moving.

After revisiting the singer/songwriter format on 2021's Heavy Sun, Lanois heads back into more ambient territory with Player, Piano, an experimental yet surprisingly poignant collection of piano instrumentals. Better known for his atmospheric guitar work, Lanois takes similar care in his approach to the piano, manipulating and shaping the instrument's natural characteristics in subtle but effective ways.

However, rather than building it into something futuristic and nearly unrecognizable like he did on 2016's spectral pedal steel opus Goodbye to Language, he turns back the clock with a deliberately vintage tone that harks back to the 1940s and '50s. Utilizing ribbon mics, dampened strings, and felt-muted hammers, Lanois creates a nostalgic sound to compliment his sparse, ethereal compositions. The stately "My All," an elegy written for his younger brother, opens the album, establishing a sentimental mood that remains throughout the set. Songs like the winsome "Inverness" and "Zsa Zsa" breathe out into the room, as gentle piano voicings interact with understated effects to create something timeless and inviting. When the occasional percussion or synth part does enter the picture, it is generally complimentary or at least unobtrusive, letting the piano fill the most space.

T-Bone Burnett - The Other Side

The Other Side

T-BONE BURNETT

Released 19 April 2024

Verve

****-

In its sincerity, elegance, and compassion, The Other Side is one of T-Bone Burnett's warmest and most emotionally resonant works, and

Most good songwriters and producers understand the value of spontaneous inspiration, and T-Bone Burnett's long and distinguished career establishes him as somewhat better than "good."

In 2019, he released The Invisible Light: Acoustic Space, which he announced would be the first installment in a trilogy of albums that would be the summation of what he has to say as an artist and his final work as a musician.

The second chapter, The Invisible Light: Spells, appeared in 2022, but while working on the final chapter, Burnett treated himself to a new guitar, and in the space of a few weeks he wrote enough songs for an LP that falls outside the confines of the Invisible Light series, changing the tone of his final act. If the Invisible Light albums were clearly meant to be a grand statement about humanity surrendering to technology accompanied by percussion and synthesized sounds, 2024's The Other Side is nearly its polar opposite. It's a collection of 12 songs of uncluttered eloquence informed by Burnett's belief in the human spirit, while the arrangements are almost exclusively taken up by acoustic instruments and vocals.

The Other Side's arrangements are so spartan that they don't even feature drums, with the guitars of Burnett and Colin Linden and the string bass of Dennis Crouch dominant among the instruments and the vocal duo Lucius lending lovely harmonies on several tracks that reinforce this album's intimacy.

While the collected aphorisms of "Everything and Nothing" and the witty breakup tune "(I'm Gonna Get Over This) Some Day" (the latter featuring Rosanne Cash) show Burnett hasn't lost his sharp wit or cleverness, this time out, he's more concerned with speaking from the heart, and in this case it pays off.

If it's less ambitious than the Invisible Light albums, it's a powerful example of what he does best as a songwriter, a vocalist, and a producer. Perhaps someone should get him another new guitar and see if he has another LP this good waiting for us.

Founded by Arnalds in 2019 the project combines music, writing, and visual media, OPIA is a wonderful place for established and upcoming artists to find common ground, inspire, and support each other.

A new venture, OPIA Community is designed as a hub for like-minded voices, a platform to lift up other artists working in parallel fields. An all-new multidisciplinary initiative, Ólafur Arnalds aims to bring together voices in the modern-classical-meets electronic nexus.

OPIA was initially founded in 2019 as a one day festival, the inaugural edition taking control of the Southbank Centre in London with performances from Ólafur Arnalds himself, his electronic duo Kiamos, Hania Rani, Rhye, Grandbrothers, Poppy Ackroyd, and more.

“Coming from the small, close-knit music scene in Iceland, community and collaboration in music has always been hugely important for my creative output. In this age of streaming algorithms and social disconnect I wanted to establish a place to meet, to talk and create, to inspire and be inspired. That was the idea behind the first OPIA and I am ecstatic to finally bring it back in this new and revitalised form. My hope is that OPIA can host an environment where creativity thrives through real life experiences and connections.”

Kiasmos, the duo of Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and Faroese musician Janus Rasmussen, announce details of their long-awaited second album II, set for release on July 5th.

When Kiasmos started out in the late 2000s, little did they know that their part-time supergroup would go stratospheric.

It was the sound of two old friends from neighbouring islands striking out against the stark piano and electropop music that they were individually celebrated for and effusively sharing their love of Berlin-inspired beats. But their pairing blew up into a world-dominating live act whose music went on to define the decade.

Kiasmos are returning, renewed and restored, with ‘II’. It’s the triumphant follow-up to their universally acclaimed self-titled debut in 2014, which re-envisioned minimal techno with orchestral flourishes and weightless production. They’d made most of that album in just two weeks; this time it’s been 10 years. The making of ‘II’ was a test of their friendship, but also testament to how great musical chemistry can always go the distance and be just the same as it ever was. “In the beginning, we hadn’t established any sound, so it was easy to write,” says Janus.

“The record sounds fuller,” agrees Ólafur. “The sound design gives you a sense of place and space.”
“II is livelier,” says Janus, “but it still retains the signature Kiasmos style of transitioning from a whisper-quiet ambience to an explosive dance beat that can blow your socks off.” Their phoenix is rising from the ashes, and ready to take flight.

Richard Thompson - Ship To Shore

Ship To Shore

RICHARD THOMPSON

Released 31 May 2024

New West Records

****-

"I think of my base as being British traditional music, but there’s also Scottish music, there’s Irish music. There’s jazz and country and classical"

When Richard Thompson began writing songs for his latest album, Ship to Shore, the artist was instinctively drawn to his own musical roots, employing them in the service of fashioning a deep and diverse 12-track collection that pulls from various styles, genres and eras, but remains unmistakably Richard Thompson.

There’s the rumbling, Motown-style rhythm that propels “Trust,” and the straightforward riff-rock of “Turnstile Casanova.” The drone-y “The Old Pack Mule,” an “old man’s song” that takes musical cues from 1600s-era European music, and “Life’s a Bloody Show,” an ode to “snake-oil salesmen and hucksters” that floats on a glammy, cabaret-like melody that’s “almost like a parody of a Noël Coward song, or something from Berlin in the 1920s,” Thompson says. “I liked the idea of having a strong base to work from and reaching out from there,” he says. “As far as I’m concerned, once you establish your base you can reach out anywhere. It’ll still be you ringing through, wherever you decide to go musically.”

Songs From The Kitchen Table

ARCHIE ROACH, RUBY HUNTER

Released 31 May 2024

Archie Roach Foundation

****-

The musical companion to the 2023 book of the same name - the ultimate illustrated commemoration of iconic Australian musicians Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter in songs, stories, photographs and tributes.

Archie Roach AO, a Gunditjmara and Bundjalung man, was born in Victoria in 1956. Taken at the age of two from parents he never saw again, he was placed into foster care. He started writing songs after meeting his soulmate Ruby Hunter when they were both homeless teenagers. His heartbreaking signature song, ‘Took the Children Away’, from his 1990 ARIA award-winning debut album Charcoal Lane, has become an anthem for the Stolen Generations. The song was the first to win an Australian Human Rights Award and the album was featured in US Rolling Stone magazine’s Top 50 in 1992, won two ARIA awards and went gold in Australia. Archie’s recording history includes twelve albums, soundtracks, film and theatrical scores and his books include the award-winning memoir Tell Me Why, accompanied by a companion album, and the picture book Took the Children Away, illustrated by Ruby Hunter.

Ruby Hunter (1955-2010) was a proud Ngarrindjeri, Kukatha, Pitjantjatjara woman from South Australia. She forged a remarkable music career, releasing three highly acclaimed albums, while raising a family with her lifelong partner and soulmate, Archie Roach. Through her songwriting Ruby tirelessly championed the rights of Aboriginal women and children out of a deep desire for positive change and equal opportunity. Like Archie, Ruby was forcibly removed from her family when only a small child. Ruby expressed their shared story through her evocative drawings for Took the Children Away, their last collaborative project.

Anastasia Coope - Darning Woman

Darning Woman

ANASTASIA COOPE

Released 31 May 2024

Jagjaguwar

****-

Like Coope’s paintings, drawings, and mixed media artworks, which occasionally feature among the imagery in her album and single materials, her songwriting yields an esoteric distance. Darning Woman is rooted deeply in the things we can touch.

The feeling that Anastasia Coope's music transmits seems to emanate from a precipice beyond the material world, like a void or memory pressing up against the veil. It’s exacting and enveloping, but unmoored in space and time: ghostly, spectral, far-out folk. Darning Woman, her debut album, feels like a dispatch from another past. Akin to lullabies or nursery rhymes, its minimal folk instrumentation contorts into something staccato and strange led by Coope's expressive, stratified vocals.

Her voice is the core of this work - emotive, oscillating between shadowy effervescence and something more guttural, building atop itself. Coope spent months teaching herself to sing in a new way, through hocketing and layering her voice, constructing choirs of herself. These songs often start from a chorus or phrase that gets stuck in Coope’s head and bloom into chaotic, fractured earworms. The word “woman” appears repeatedly throughout the album’s song titles, but for Coope, that was an unconscious motif. “The word ‘woman’ was having a physical idea of what my songs were trying to represent through this idea of a muse or an idol or an icon,” she says. “It was a mix of the idea of being maternal, of housekeeping, and then also the idea of a character, a star.”

Carlos Nino & Friends - Placenta

Placenta

CARLOS NINO & FRIENDS

Released 24 May 2024

International Anthem

****-

A moving tribute to the spirit of family and the process of childbirth, Placenta is one of the great conceptual jazz albums of recent times, and a standout release in Carlos Niño & Friends’ discography.

For Carlos Niño, collaboration is not only a creative force but a spiritual one. As he put it in a 2020 interview with this publication: “Music is expansive, and has the ability to inspire people to wake up and to tune in to higher realizations of themselves—to have an expanded experience as a human on this earth.”

You can trace this belief back to his earliest musical projects, when the Los Angeles percussionist, producer, and connector brought together a cross-generational family of local musicians for Build An Ark and, more recently, in his work as a co-producer and key ensemble member on Andre 3000’s album New Blue Sun. Most of all, though, you can hear it in his main group, Carlos Niño & Friends, and their heady fusion of spiritual jazz, Space Age fusion, folk, and ambient, which harnesses interplay as a kind of healing energy.

Placenta—Carlos Niño & Friends’ latest for International Anthem and the 12th since the project’s inception—was created with positive communal vibrations in mind. Inspired by the gestation, delivery, and birth of Niño’s child Moss, it showcases regular collaborators from the new school like Sam Gendel, Surya Botofasina, and Jamire Williams, alongside elders such as Adam Rudolph, Ariel Kalma, the late Iasos, and—once again—Andre 3000.

Trails (EP)

ROBBIE BELCHAMBER

Released 31 May 2024

Dune Castle Records

****-

"Trails" captures ... the bubbling rhythms of water, melodic inventions of currawongs and magpies, pervasive scents of the bush, all changing with the seasons.

Robbie Belchamber is a guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Naarm (Melbourne).

Drawing upon elements of jazz, brazilian, west african and folk music, the seven compositions that comprise "Trails" are centered around the soft timbre of fingerstyle nylon-string guitar, with subtle arrangements incorporating voice, flute, percussion, mandolin, accordion and electric guitar filling out the texture.

Speaking on the record, Robbie said “During lockdown I spent a lot of time exploring Melbourne's northern waterways, riding my bike along the Birrarung, Darebin creek and Merri creek. These opportunities to slow down, reflect, observe and spend time in nature formed the genesis of many of the compositions.

"Trails" is Robbie's first studio record, and features contributions from Melbourne musicians - percussionist Lucky Pereira (Glass Beams, 30/70), vocalists Hannah McKittrick, Aidan Ryan (NoLess) and Grace Robinson (Empress), accordionist Moses Carr,  and flautist Erica Tuccerri.

Andra Day - Cassandra (Cherith)

CASSANDRA (Cherith))

ANDRA DAY

Released 10 May 2024

Warner Music

****-

“CASSANDRA (cherith) is a journey through my soul, from a state of being already full rather than from a place of lack. It’s an intimate reflection of my personal experiences and growth, presented through the language of music.”

It would be an understatement to say that the nine years between Cheers to the Fall and CASSANDRA (cherith) were eventful for Andra Day.

Most famously, she starred in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, consequently won a Golden Globe and a Grammy, and was nominated for an Academy Award. The additional soundtrack material, featured appearances, and stray singles she recorded during the interim could constitute a whole other album. Meanwhile, Day also stockpiled songs for her second LP as the first one, thanks to "Rise Up" -- performed at the 2016 Democratic National Convention and embraced by the Black Lives Matter movement -- remained in the air. While the singer's second album is full of heartache like her first, it's rather different -- less stylized, more modern, and seemingly more personal. Day again co-wrote and co-produced everything but teamed with an almost entirely new cast of collaborators. It often sounds like the effort of a band, one that can play traditional soul and pop with seamless integration of contemporary flavors.

Don't Thank Me, Spank Me!

“Life is confusing. Sometimes we wanna eat the rich, sometimes we wanna be the rich, sometimes we wanna make-out with someone cute, sometimes we wanna slow-dance around the room like our grandparents did, sometimes we wanna be good, and sometimes we just wanna be bad.”

Don’t Thank Me, Spank Me! are a genius combination of sublime songwriting, good hair and matching Fender Mustangs - Aussie Fran Fines on dexies, sipping cheap chardonnay and wielding loud guitars. The soon-to-be cult Melbourne outfit is made up of best friends Nitida Atkinson (vocals and guitar) and Esther Henderson (vocals and bass).

Their self-titled debut album packs a punch. “This album is basically a love affair between our greatest musical influences. We love girl bands from the 70s like the Runaways and the Slits for their attitude and badass-ery and girl power. We love the crass 80s pop/rock aesthetic. We love 90s RnB. We loved Britney Spears with all our hearts! And of course we couldn’t make an album without our parents’ taste in music creeping in - you can hear some real ELO moments and Cate Ceberano themes going on.”

The album’s themes speak to the duo’s experience as women moving through the world.

Finn Rees - Dawn Is Melody

Dawn Is Melody

FINN REES

Released 31 May 2024

Mr Bongo

****-

“An effective snapshot of the talent and versatility of the young Melbourne jazz scene, and positions Rees as a bandleader, composer and musician whose profile, like that Tasmanian sun, is guaranteed to rise." - Jazzwise

Expert keys player for 30/70 and Elle Shimada, one-half of Close Counters and an exemplary jazz artist in his own, Finn Rees has fast become one of Melbourne's finest talents.

In Finn’s own words: “My intention with Dawn Is A Melody was to create a world; a microcosm of colour. Something rich and beautiful that allowed the melodies and compositions to reach their full potential. It was driven by hope, curiosity and the search for beauty and reassurance in this ever-changing world. The emotion behind the music is really about the journey of life, growing up and changing, as well as my relationship with Tasmania’s natural landscapes where I grew up, a part of the world that is incredibly unique and beautiful.”

Plotting a course from Alice Coltrane, through Herbie Hancock, to Arthur Verocai, this is a debut nourished by the past but firmly made in the present. A record unable to be age-stamped, casting ambiguity as to when, what era and by whom it has been crafted. Like a vintage lens capturing a current scene, Dawn Is A Melody is warm and familiar yet focused on the here now.

Caoilfhionn Rose - Constellation

Constellation

CAOILFJIONN ROSE

Released 24 May 2024

Gondwana Recordings

*****

The ten tracks on ‘Constellation’ feel rooted in a knowledge of folk, jazz and all the twentieth century’s classic tunesmiths, and yet they seem to create a magical, otherworldly space of her own imagining, blending Caoilfhionn’s core piano with synths, and pitting a live rhythm section and saxophone embellishments against ambient samples and future-facing production techniques.

Caoilfhionn Rose (pronounced Keelin), is a singer, songwriter and producer who was born in Manchester, England, with family roots in Northern Ireland and Yorkshire (UK).

With her third Gondwana album, ‘Constellation’, Caoilfhionn Rose has come of age as an artist, digging deep to find experimental new ways of expressing her wonder at nature’s beauty, her love of music in all its diversity, and her belief in the restorative powers that both afford in the troubled post-COVID world.

‘Constellation’ features contributions from Halsall’s rhythm section, drummer Alan Taylor and bassist Gavin Barras, as well as Jordan Smart from Mammal Hands, whose supple sax exquisitely colours the fringes of most of its songs. Also guesting: John Ellis, former member of The Cinematic Orchestra, beatifically tinkling the ivories at the end of ‘Fall Into Place’, and producer Aaron Wood via a raft of ambient samples adding textured loveliness throughout ‘Rainfall’.

“I love being open to collaboration,” Rose enthuses, “and the record’s a collage, knitting together all these influences, sounds and players, and just really going for it with the experimentation in the production.”

Camera Obscura - Look to the East, Look to the West

Look to the East,

Look to the West

CAMERA OBSCURA

Released 3 May 2024

Merge Records

****-

Although the band retains a knack for lush songs that are at once dreamy and catchy, the 11 tracks here are subtler than in years past.

Camera Obscura came right at you on a string of albums in the early 2000s with bright melodies that were at once effervescent and gloriously plaintive. Many of the songs took up residence in your brain and refused to leave.

The Scottish group takes a more subdued approach on their latest, Look to the East, Look to the West, Camera Obscura’s first album since Desire Lines in 2013, and since the death of keyboardist and singer Carey Lander from an aggressive form of bone cancer in 2015.

Camera Obscura reconvened in 2018 for a handful of gigs and, after a pandemic-elongated delay, have finally returned with Look to the East, Look to the West.

No wonder the band stayed dormant for a few years, which is when singer Tracyanne Campbell teamed up with Danny Coughlan to record a self-titled album as Tracyanne & Danny.

That’s understandable: Everyone is older now, and the youthful fervor that fueled the band’s earlier work doesn’t burn quite as hot. You can hear it in the music: In place of the bold string charts and sweeping orchestrations, Look to the East, Look to the West goes for a more basic sound that favors keyboards, particularly organ and piano.

ROWENA WISE

Released 24 May 2024

Beloved Recordings

****-

“Life is confusing. Sometimes we wanna eat the rich, sometimes we wanna be the rich, sometimes we wanna make-out with someone cute, sometimes we wanna slow-dance around the room like our grandparents did, sometimes we wanna be good, and sometimes we just wanna be bad.”

Rowena Wise is a Naarm/Melbourne based artist hailing from the Western Australian surf town of Margaret River.

She is a songwriter, inspired by poetry and storytelling. She believes truth lies in fiction. With a voice that can caress you in one breath and carve you apart in the next, she has been praised for her sharp storytelling and raw performances, earning the moniker 'lyrical assassin' from the Australian triple j community.

An artist whose ruminations on love, alienation, and self-empowerment are fast catching attention, her music has been described by CLASH as “carefully etched indie folk”.

Rowena Wise’s musical journey began at a young age. Together with her mother (a folk musician from Chicago) and father (a luthier who builds the custom guitars she plays today), they performed as a family band throughout her youth, playing folk festivals all over. Now, grown up and living on the opposite coast in Melbourne, Rowena is on the precipice of something exciting of her own.

Inspired by the strong storytelling sensibilities of 60s folk icons and making a sound that sits her snugly alongside the likes of Aldous Harding, Julia Jacklin, and Waxahatchee, Rowena found her spark during a down moment while traveling at the end of a relationship.

TRAFAEL KARLEN,

THE AUSTRALIAN VOICES AND CAMERATA,

QUEENSLAND'S CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Released 31 May 2024

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

****-

How do you articulate the heartbreak of erasing 12,000 years of history and the drowning the homes of tens of thousands of people?

This album takes us to the Turkish town of Hasankeyf: once one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, home of empires and civilisations, now deep underwater as part of a project to dam the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
Composer Rafael Karlen and lyricist Pearly Black chose to focus on questioning what is gained, what is lost and how we choose what to preserve and remember. This thought-provoking and profoundly moving work is performed by two of Australia’s finest contemporary music ensembles: the instrumentalists of Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra and the brilliant singers of The Australian Voices, with the plaintive saxophone of Rafael Karlen weaving its spell in and around the orchestra and choir.

Charlie Moon Sings & Plays

CHARLIE MOON

Released 21 May 2024

Charlie Moon

****-

With his sophomore release, Charlie Moon's album is an homage not only to Chet Baker but also to the jazz standard that resonated in artist's formative years.

Emerging from his jazz guitar studies at Newpark in Dublin, rising star of the Dublin jazz scene, Charlie Moon's journey into the world of singing unfolds against the backdrop of his early twenties.

The artist's venture into vocal performance came from the necessity of funding his music education. The dilemma was clear: venues crave singers, not student jazz guitarists.

Despite his lack of training, Moon embraced the challenge and cut his teeth on vocal standards by drawing inspiration from the timeless Chet Baker Sings catalogue.

With a nod to the late jazz trumpeter and vocalist, the singer's aptly-titled Charlie Moon Sings & Plays is named after the 1955 Chet Baker Sings and Plays record.

With a stripped-down blend of guitar and voice, this project reflects Moon's evolution from a student seeking gigs to an artist confidently navigating the realms of jazz standards—a journey influenced by the legacy of Chet Baker, and the enduring guitar stylings of Barney Kessel.

BRAD MEHLDAU

Released 10 May 2024

Nonesuch Records

On Après Fauré, Mehldau performs four nocturnes, from a thirty-seven-year span of Gabriel Fauré’s career, as well as a reduction of an excerpt from the Adagio movement of his Piano Quartet in G Minor.

Here Mehldau’s four compositions that Fauré inspired are presented in a group, bookended by two sections featuring the French composer’s work.

Discussing the Après Fauré album in his note, Mehldau says: “If the sublime foreshadows our mortality, this music might communicate the austerity of death—Fauré’s as it approached him, but also the apprehension of our own. We find a kinship with the composer finally, in the form of a question that he tossed off into the future, to us. I have composed four pieces to accompany Fauré’s music here, to share the way I have engaged with Fauré’s question, with you, the listener.”

After Bach II

BRAD MEHLDAU

Released 10 May 2024

Nonesuch Records

****-

The Bach album comprises four preludes and one fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier, as well as the Allemande from the fourth Partita, interspersed with seven compositions or improvisations by Mehldau inspired by the complementary works of Bach—including Mehldau’s Variations on Bach’s Goldberg Theme.

Mehldau, speaking of the “universality” of Bach’s music, says in his liner note: “The more you try to engage with him, the more your own personality becomes visible, unavoidably. You are not playing Bach—Bach is playing you, in the sense that he lays you bare ... The greatest choice you make at all times is not out of an absence, but from what is there, in its totality. Specifically, it is the constant choice you make in how to negotiate between harmony and melody.”

Your Mother Should Know: Brad Mehldau Plays The Beatles

BRAD MEHLDAU

Released 10 May 2024

Nonesuch Records

****-

Brad Mehldau's Your Mother Should Know: Brad Mehldau Plays The Beatles, a live solo album, features the pianist and composer’s interpretations of nine songs by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and one by George Harrison.

Although other Beatles songs have long been staples of Mehldau’s solo and trio shows, he had not previously recorded any of the tunes on Your Mother Should Know.

The album ends with a David Bowie classic that draws a connection between The Beatles and pop songwriters who followed.

“There is an undisputed universality to The Beatles,” Mehldau says. “Their music cuts across cultural and generational lines, as new listeners continue to discover it. There is an immediacy and integrity to their songs that draws everyone in.

Mehldau further considers, “In his book The Western Canon, Harold Bloom confronted the question of what makes particular books endure: ‘The answer, more often than not, has turned out to be strangeness, a mode of originality that either cannot be assimilated, or that so assimilates us that we cease to see it as strange.’

“If we look at The Beatles and the multitude of artists who have been influenced by one or another facet of their oeuvre, this paradoxical recipe for longevity is one way to consider their ongoing footprint,” Mehldau continues. “For there is a good deal of strangeness to much of their music, particularly in the series of game-changing albums that begin with Rubber Soul through the release of their final record, Let It Be.”

20th Anniversary Tour

ANE BRUN

Released 31 May 2024

Balloon Ranger Recordings

****-

From busking on the streets of Barcelona as a law school dropout in her early twenties, to becoming one of Scandinavia’s best-loved musicians with ten studio albums to her name, Brun has built the kind of career that’s becoming increasingly rare, in an industry that’s almost unrecognisable from that of 20 years ago – and almost all of it on her own terms.

Having celebrated two decades as an artist with a major retrospective in 2023, Ane Brun is turning her gaze once again to the journey still to come. For all the beauty and fulfillment that comes with the closing of a significant chapter, there’s only so much looking back that the curious mind can do. As a songwriter, Brun’s most creative work has often come out of periods of renewal. To compare her first and second decades as an artist is to see her work in dramatically different colours. The years have only made her braver and more playful in her self-expression, following her instincts to create freely and fearlessly across genres and art forms.

To fully understand Brun as an artist you need to look beyond the albums, for a lifetime of fostering community and collaboration lives there. Over her 20 years in the business, Brun has become an almost matriarchal figure, seizing every opportunity to connect and celebrate her fellow artists. Brun’s ambition still burns brightly, her hunger to write the next chapter undimmed. Whatever the next decade holds, it will be anything but predictable. And it starts now.

One Way or Another, Vol 2

ROBIN HOLCOMB

Released 31 May 2024

Robin Holcomb

****-

Holcomb spent four days at ShowGhost studio in Whitefish, Montana, with only her voice, a Steinway grand piano, and state of the art audio gear. Working with her husband - composer and producer Wayne Horvitz - they chose selections from her four previously released Nonesuch titles, plus compositions from two theater projects.

In 1992, Robin Holcomb stunned the music community with her eponymously titled album, released on Elektra/Nonesuch records. Relatively obscure, Holcomb was best known for her compositions and improvisations as a pianist, and her association with the avant-garde and New York City’s downtown scene. The songs were in equal measure gorgeous, challenging, sophisticated, direct, and mysterious. The lyrics spoke to the times like no other. As critic Ben Ratliff simply stated, Holcomb’s music is “staggeringly beautiful.” At the time the term “Americana” barely existed, but to those in the know Holcomb’s music wrote the book – with a strange mingling of a long-lost agrarian tradition, and its intersection with the myriad contradictions of modern American life. Many artists have mined the vast repertoire of early American music, but few with such originality, poetic vision, and utterly unique harmonic language. As the Village Voice commented after her first release, “Satie goes to Appalachia, Morricone goes to the Knitting factory, and you, dear art-folk fan, die and go to heaven.” After years of focusing primarily on her composing, her family, and her garden, Ms. Holcomb returned to the recording studio to record “One Way or Another.” “I wanted to revisit the past, and also make public more recent work, cover tunes, and various other projects.”

The recordings offer a stark and intimate view of these masterful compositions, without production touches, orchestrations, or overdubs.

KENNY BARRON

KIYOSHI KITAGAWA, JONATHAN BLAKE, IMMANUEL WILLIAMS

Released 10 May 2024

Artwork Records

****-

Once again, one of the great artists of our era, a pianist, composer, arranger, delivers to us here a live album.

Kenny Barron has been a continuous major presence on the jazz scene since the late 1950s. Growing up in Philadelphia, Kenny hit the ground running right after high school, already backing Jimmy Heath, and Yusef Lateef. Soon stints with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Lou Donaldson, Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, and Stanley Turrentine followed.

Barron first recorded as a co-leader with Jimmy Owens in 1968, and by 1973, was leading his own sessions. His discography exceeds 50 releases, and now nearly 81 years old, Mr. Barron, is as vital as ever.

Following a Grammy nominated solo session last year, The Source, Kenny’s latest CD, Beyond This Place, debuts this month. Along with his long time rhythm section of bassist, Kiyoshi Kitagawa, and drummer, Jonhathan Blake; veteran vibist, Steve Nelson, and young lion, alto saxist, Immanuel Wilkins, rounds out this quintet.

Barron wrote six out of the nine compositions here. The other three tracks come from Thelonious Monk, and standards of  “The Nearness of You,” and “Softly, As In a Morning Sunrise.” The standards are re-invigorated, especially because of the symbiotic interplay between Kenny and Steve. The piano/vibes blend seamlessly.

The original Barron tracks also feature the bluesy, feathery light alto tone of Immanuel Wilkins, and rock solid accompaniment of the rhythm section. This new classy release verifies his mastery on piano remains alive, and ever so welcome.

Jim White, Marissa Anderson - Swallowtail

Swallowtail

JIM WHITE, MARISSA ANDERSON

Released 10 May 2024

Thrill Jockey Records

****-

Swallowtail is a deepening of that trust, White and Anderson completely immersed in the moment, each attuned to the other fluidly moving as wind and water.

Jim White is an Australian percussionist, active since 1980 with an incredible array of artists and bands, though he is probably best known as the drummer of Dirty Three. He currently collaborates with Marissa Anderson, George Xylouris (as Xylouris White) and a number of others. He released his first solo album "All Hits: Memories" in March, 2024, on Drag City.

Marisa Anderson channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her playing is fluid, emotional, and masterful, featuring compositions and improvisations that re-imagine the landscape of American music. Her work applies elements of minimalism, electronic music, drone and 20th century classical music to compositions based on blues, jazz, gospel and country music.

The collaboration between renowned drummer Jim White and acclaimed guitarist Marisa Anderson is a natural union of two of the most intuitive players and listeners working in music. White and Anderson are each very in-demand as collaborators in no small part because of their mastery, versatility and highly expressive playing. The duo have each amassed an impressive body of work, and remain at the vanguard of their practices due to an insatiable curiosity and delight in exploration of new avenues of expression. Their 2020 debut The Quickening exemplified that daring spirit as an exercise in trust: two musicians who had never performed together before committing those first moments in time to record.

Swallowtail was recorded in the Australian coastal town of Point Lonsdale, Victoria.

Lars Bartkuhn - Nomad

Nomad

LARS BARTKUHN

Released 17 May 2024

Rush Hour

****-

Nomad, then, is an album that effortlessly showcases Bartkuhn’s unique musical personality and ability to craft warm, colourful sound worlds – some rhythmic, others not so much – while neatly sidestepping categorization. It could well be his strongest and most personal musical statement yet.

Back in 2016, Lars Bartkuhn was on a quest to expand his musical horizons. Inspired by the idea of the desert as a transformative place – an alien environment whose combination of vastness and beauty challenges those lost within it to first find themselves before they can find a way out – he loaded up his sampler with sub-Saharan samples and set about making two 12” singles, ‘Nomad’ and ‘Massai’, which subsequently appeared on Utopia Records.

Following completion of work on his 2023 album Dystopia, a conceptual ambient meditation built around electronic and acoustic improvisations, the German musician and producer decided to return to the core ideas that inspired those two 12” singles. Once again, he wanted to challenge himself, explore the more exotic side of his musical influences, and discover a course through the musical desert to ultimately become a better musician, producer, and composer.

The result is Nomad, an album that not only brings together two sides of his work – the immersive ambient explorations at the heart of Dystopia, and the club-focused rhythms that marked out his early career deep house explorations – but also draws on a familiar palette of influences, from Latin jazz-fusion and the deep jazz brilliance of ECM Records releases, to the ‘fourth world’ works of Jon Hassell and the African music that had initially inspired the ‘Nomad’ and ‘Massai’ singles.

Roger Kellaway - Live At Mezzrow

Nomad

LARS BARTKUHN

Released 17 May 2024

Rush Hour

****-

Once again, one of the great artists of our era, a pianist, composer, arranger, delivers to us here a live album.

Always inspired by the trios of Nat King Cole and Oscar Peterson, Kellaway comments: “I was so honored to have received the 2023 Living Masters Award from the SmallsLIVE Foundation. This opportunity gave me the chance to come to the East and simply play with my longtime colleague, Jay Leonhart on bass, and a musician whom I deeply admire (new to my trio), Dennis Mackrel on drums.”

From the beginning of this album, one is struck by the fluidity of Kellaway’s pianistic expression, a magical style for laying down notes.

Roger Kellaway’s talent not only lies in his performance; beyond a certain expertise, there is a vision of musical writing and arrangements that is unique to him, never seeking to impress anyone, and ultimately, Roger Kellaway subtly offers us an imaginative vision of his career, each moment of which is a true feast. While there are no original compositions here, the impressive arrangement work allows one to loop his version of “So What” to listen and re-listen to the drumming, bass, and piano that beautifully underpin the title’s introduction.

Greg Foat & Gigi Masin - The Fish Factory Sessions

The Fish Factory Sessions

GREG FOAT & GIGI MASIN

Released 31 May 2024

Strut Records

****-

Greg Foat is one of the UK’s leading jazz pianists and composers.
He has recorded prolifically in recent years for Jazzman Records, Athens Of The North and, most recently, for Strut, switching effortlessly from soul-jazz fusions to cinematic, haunting compositions, pastoral acid folk and electronic soundscapes.

Gigi Masin, born in Venice in 1955 has been in the music scene since early 70’s playing in rock bands or solo with his acoustic guitar (in a blues/folk Martyn - Gaughan style). One of the first generation of radio DJs on radio FM/AM stations in Italy, he’s considered a forerunner of the ‘turntablism’ using phonograph-turntables to create and manipulate sounds, he performed with records, mixers, live electronics

Fresh off the heels of their critically acclaimed collaboration album "Dolphin", Foat and Masin join forces once again for The Fish Factory Sessions, an exclusive release for Record Store Day 2024.

This mesmerising studio session was recorded during a live performance at Antonio Feola’s beloved Fish Factory Studios in London, in August 2022. The ensemble that enchanted listeners on "Dolphin" reassembles, featuring the talents of Greg Foat, Gigi Masin, Moses Boyd on drums, and Tom Herbert on bass.

Within this ambient, somewhat Balearic journey, you'll find alternate renditions of Masin's poignant tribute to his late wife, 'Sabena,' and the atmospheric 'Viento Calido,' both of which graced the original "Dolphin" release. In addition, the album introduces two fresh compositions: the uplifting 'Jubilation' and the extended freestyle opus 'Three Piece Suite,' representing some of the most inspired recordings from their collaboration to date.

Released as a limited single LP, The Fish Factory Sessions is pressed on translucent sky blue vinyl housed in an untreated card sleeve with spot varnish. Mastered by Mark Ashfield at Cosmic Audio.

Thandiswa - Sankofa

Sankofa

THANDISWA

Released 10 May 2024

King The Music

****-

"It is about a celebration of the pan-African spirit, healing old wounds, and returning to what honours us."

Since the beginning of her career in 1996, the legendary artist has been one of the most influential singers in post-apartheid South Africa. Known for her electrifying performances, Thandiswa has toured the world and will celebrate her new offering with shows in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

Sankofa is a Ghanaian Twi word that means ‘to go back and fetch what has been left behind’. The making of this work, her first album of original songs since 2009’s Ibokwe, has embodied this idea.

Recorded in Johannesburg, Dakar, and New York, the album combines archival Xhosa samples, jazz and west African music. It includes songs produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, Chris Bruce, Nduduzo Makhathini, Tendai Shoko and Thandiswa. It features collaborations with Thandi Ntuli and Nduduzo Makhathini.

Thandiswa says, “The making of Sankofa was a sonic odyssey that took me from the ancient villages of the Eastern Cape to Dakar and New York, weaving a thread that culminated in something truly special. Within those ancient rhythms and polyrhythms, a common lexicon revealed itself to me and I am excited to share this music with those who have been growing and evolving with me. Listen out for uhadi, umrhubhe, ngoni, kora and drums in the music.“

Jimi Tenor, Gold Diamond & Mink - Is There Love In Outer Space?

Is There Love In Outer Space?

JIM TENOR, GOLD DIAMOND & MINK

Released 31 May 2024

Timmion Records

****-

There are certain occasions when you can truly feel the stars align. One of these is when the interstellar voyager of cosmic soul Helsinki, Finland's Jimi Tenor finally lands his spaceship at full force on a Timmion recording.

In 2024, he will be serving us a spaced out album session recorded together with Cold Diamond & Mink (the in-house production team and studio band at Helsinki's Timmion Records). Jimi is no stranger in these space ways as he has operated behind the Timmion scenes for years, furnishing several of the label's artists with his flute and reeds artistry.

The first album out is titled "Is There Love In Outer Space?", which begs the question with the force of five extended tracks that are guaranteed to blow your mind to the stratosphere. The pieces are loaded with whooshing and glistening synth noises and span from lofi space funk to cinematic soundscapes. The sweetly floating title track is like some of those galactic ballads that rare soul collectors are spending their pensions on. At the other side of the spectrum, album closer 'What Are You Doing?' sounds like Sun Ra sat down at a JBs session, and is straight up meant to get that booty moving.

Combined with the raw soul prowess of CD&M, Jimi is able to refine new shades from his already impressive repertoire of talent. Even if you are a friend of his previous work you might not have heard him get down quite like this.

Nightmares On Wax - Carboot Soul

Carboot Soul

NIGHTMARES ON WAX

Released 31 May 2024

Warp Records

****-

Carboot Soul, the third Nightmares On Wax album, resisted the urge to go bigger and bolder. 1999 marked a year of unprecedented change, as the world prepared to enter a new millennium, and both the push for and fear of change manifested in public hysteria such as Y2K. Massive Attack and Tricky had harnessed this apprehension on their respective masterpieces, Mezzanine and Pre Millennium Tension, which pushed against the prevailing mood of Brit-Pop and New Labour’s sunny optimism with a crepuscular mood that suggested trouble was lurking behind false promises. Nonetheless, by the turn of the century trip hop’s troubled worldview had largely fallen out of favour with mainstream listeners, who were far more receptive to the hyperactive sound of acts such as Basement Jaxx.

There was a soulful classicism that remained in the Nightmares on Wax sound, extending its life beyond the decline of the genre it helped establish. Following his second album, Smokers Delight, Evelyn had been inspired to incorporate more live instrumentation into their music, building from an initial keys and beats base towards something that resembled a small symphony of both sampled and performed sound. Robin Taylor-Frith’s dexterous performances are again used throughout the album, notably on tracks such as the opener ‘Les Nuits’, in which his staccato keyboard is offset by a velveteen bed of cinematic strings. The album’s cast of musicians also included Chris Dawkins on guitar, Hamlet Luton on bass, and soul singer Sara Winton, whilst orchestral arrangements were handled by the Pure Strings Orchestra.

Listen: Nightmares On Wax ‘Carboot Soul’ Musical Lead Up Playlist
This evolutionary step in their music making marked a move towards something that resembled a traditional band set-up; a major shift for a project that had begun life as an extension of DJ-ing. Evelyn saw this as a necessary development for Nightmares On Wax’s continued growth: “Doing the live side proves there is more to the music. People have something more tangible to relate the music to and it gives us the chance to connect with the audience.”
The producer wasn’t quite ready to abandon his drum machine however, which kept its place at the beating heart of the group’s operation. This was integral in maintaining hip-hop’s vital undercurrent; tracks such as ‘Morse’ and the New York-styled ‘Easejimi’ reassured listeners that, at its core, this was still dance music, whilst the rhythmic interplay with Winton’s vocals on ‘Survival’ and ‘Finer’ invoked a British R&B influence from the likes of Soul II Soul and Sade.

Carboot Soul also wasn’t afraid to be an easy-listening record. Chill out had become a vital facet of rave culture – a salve to the scene’s wilder strains, popularised by genre-defining records such as The KLF’s ‘Chill Out’ and Apex Twin’s ambient masterpieces ‘Selected Ambients Works’ Volumes One and Two. Trip hop had often blurred the lines between serenity and insanity, exploiting a latent melancholy in the afterglow of the party.
Whilst this was an artistic prerogative for the likes of Portishead and Massive Attack, Nightmares On Wax had always maintained some sense of placidity. A sunny, Californian warmth permeates every track on Carboot Soul, as if it were tailor made for a slow cruise through the streets of Los Angeles. Tracks such as ‘Fire In The Middle’ sidestep ambient and chill-out cliché, drawing instead from the g-funk of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, with a relaxed tempo, swung percussion, and instruments that melt into the air like smoke. Amidst the artificial complexity of Warp’s catalogue, it stood out as something boldly organic.
