Sinister Grift
PANDA BEAR
Released 28 February 2025
*****
Uplifting melodies frame introspective lyrics reflecting upon change and resilience amid complex personal upheaval.
A founding member of the American experimental pop band Animal Collective, Noah Lennox (Panda Bear) has also established a notable solo career characterized by dense, layered approaches to experimental indie rock, blending electronic, psychedelic pop, and indie elements.
"Sinister Grift," marks Panda Bear's return to the solo music scene after a six-year hiatus. The album emerges from a period of significant personal transformation for Lennox, including his recent divorce, which profoundly influences the thematic depth of the record.
Working in his Lisbon, Portugal home studio with Animal Collective bandmate Josh “Deakin” Dibb, Lennox transforms Panda Bear into something resembling an old-school rock ensemble, playing nearly all the instruments himself and inviting kindred spirits into the process such as Cindy Lee, Spirit of the Beehive’s Rivka Ravede, and for the first time on a Panda Bear solo album, each of his Animal Collective bandmates.
The Guardian describes it as a compelling, albeit challenging, listen that delves into dark and despairing themes, while presenting Lennox's voice in a raw, clear manner. NPR highlights the album's ability to balance the pain of change with uplifting music, creating a frisson that resonates with listeners.

Ólafur Arnalds is a pre-eminent Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and composer who has built a global following by blending classical strings and piano with electronic elements, creating ambient soundscapes. Notable works include his award-winning scores for TV series "Broadchurch" (2015) and "Surface" (2022) and solo albums like "Some Kind of Peace" (2020), "re:member" (2018) "Eulogy for Evolution"

LORENZO ESPOSITO, LISA GERRARD
FEAT. ERICA PICCOTTI
Released 21 March 2025
*****
The hauntingly mesmerizing interplay of human voice, cello, orchestration and production.
Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari (LEF) an Italian vocalist, composer, and producer who has collaborated with the likes of Bill Laswell, Ben Harper and others. For this captivating soundtrack, he joins with Lisa Gerrard, the renowned vocalist and composer from Melbourne, Australia who gained prominence as part of the duo Dead Can Dance and is acclaimed for her unique contralto voice and use of glossolalia.
This release follows closely their collaboration for the soundtrack for "City of Dreams", which featured in our February 2025 playlist.
Their compositions are enlivened by the work of Erica Piccotti (Rome, Italy), an accomplished cellist known for her expressive performances and technical prowess.
Although less than 30 minutes in duration, the eleven track "100 Preludi" soundtrack album is nonetheless a captivating auditory journey that complements the film's narrative of a young cellist's quest for self-discovery.
Piccotti herself takes the role of the fil's main character Mara, while Gerrard's vocals mirror the film’s themes of isolation, loss, and transformation.
Throughout the soundtrack, the artists' balance and control of their elemental contributions is manifest: Gerrard's ethereal vocals, Piccotti's powerful cello and LEF's orchestration, production and effects. These elements are deployed to varying effect as the music complements the narrative arc of the motion picture.

Defiant Life
VIJAY AYER, WADADA LEO SMITH
Released 21 March 2025
****-
If the album is a contemplation on life as such, then it is its sense of wonder that comes to full expression here.
Anchored in the idea that, despite all obstacles, the human experience casts a net of possibilities, Defiant Life - Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith second duo recording for ECM (the other entitled "A Cosmic Rhythm With Each Stroke" (2015) - proves a profound meditation on the human condition and both the suffering and resilience it entails.
An ethereal iridescence glistens between Leo Smith’s unmistakable trumpet wail and Vijay’s textural keystrokes on piano and Fender Rhodes, conjuring multi-dimensional spaces of thoughtful musical conversation. “We work from our individual languages and materials,” notes Vijay in his extensive liner note, as well as “our methods of aural attunement, and what I would call a shared aesthetic of necessity”. A necessity both urgent and peaceful, ominously stated in the first long-track “Sumud”, then dressed in bluesy undertones throughout the “Floating River Requiem”, still doubtful but with silver linings on “Elegy: The Pilgrimage” and devastatingly beautiful in the concluding “Procession: Defiant Life”.
Recorded within two days at Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo, Defiant Life was produced by Manfred Eicher.

Can Never Block The Sun
(IA11 Edition)
BEN LAMAR GAY
Released 18 March 2025
International Anthem
*****
This compilation of unreleased tracks blends jazz, funk, hip-hop, and experimental sounds into a vibrant tapestry - an immersive listening experience.
Ben LaMar Gay’s de facto debut album, 'Downtown Castles Can Never Block The Sun' (2018) was his label International Anthem's attempt to introduce the legendary Chicago composer / improviser / renaissance man to the rest of the world - with a compilation of tracks from 7 albums he made over 7 years (though he hadn’t yet made the effort to actually release).
The material showcases Gay’s penchant for genre-hopping – from Steve Reich-ian soundscape voyages to Don Cherry-esque polyrhythm treks to Jorge Ben-style vocal-and-string earworms – while keeping his singular musical voice in focus.
In the years since its release, this long out-of-print collection has become a touchstone, foreshadowing the breadth and scope of Gay’s output since. The songs-between-the-songs warped Soul Americana madness and beauty of 'Open Arms To Open Us', the unhinged long form freedom of 'Certain Reveries' – each fresh mode would defy expectation if without the context established by Downtown Castles. To quote our OG announcement of the album: “to call it ‘eclectic’ would only scratch the surface. This music is everything.”
The IA11 Edition of this LP contains the original 15 tracks from the 2018 release and adds five more to increase the volume to just on an hour. The new release comes with an IARC2025 obi strip plus a 4-page insert booklet featuring new (old) photos and new liner notes by musician (and longtime BLG friend/collaborator) Gira Dahnee.

Consentrik Quartet
NELS CLINE, INGRID LAUBROCK,
CHRIS LIGHTCAP, TOM RAINEY
Released 14 March 2025
*****
A compelling addition to Cline's discography, reflecting his open-minded approach to music-making and the profound chemistry among the quartet members.
Best known for his work alongside Jeff Tweedy in Wilco, Nels Cline's latest endeavor, the Consentrik Quartet, showcases his enduring commitment to musical exploration, seamlessly blending his rock roots with avant-garde jazz sensibilities. Cline has consistently ventured into diverse musical landscapes, and this quartet features esteemed musicians: saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, bassist Chris Lightcap, and drummer Tom Rainey. Their collective synergy is evident throughout, as they navigate intricate compositions with both precision and spontaneity. The interplay between Cline's guitar and Laubrock's saxophone is particularly noteworthy, creating a dynamic dialogue that propels the music forward.
The album's sequencing offers a circular flow, with tracks like "Down Close" and "Time of No Sirens" providing introspective counterpoints to the more tumultuous pieces. This deliberate pacing allows the listener to experience the quartet's full emotional and sonic range.
Cline's compositions serve as a roadmap to his rich palette of influences, drawing parallels to the experimental works of Andrew Hill and Eric Dolphy. The quartet's ability to traverse various musical terrains without losing coherence is a testament to their collective mastery and shared vision.
In the context of Cline's career, the Consentrik Quartet stands as a bridge between his rock affiliations and his deep-seated jazz inclinations. While fans of Wilco may find the free-jazz setting unfamiliar, the album offers an accessible entry point into avant-garde jazz, blending uncompromising indie-rock energy with exploratory improvisation.

Luminescent Creatures
ICHIKO AOBA
Released 28 February 2024
*****
A singular force in modern music: neither folk or classical, neither ambient or traditional, but something beautifully in between.
Ichiko Aoba is a Japanese singer-songwriter and guitarist renowned for her ethereal, minimalist folk compositions. Drawing influence from classical music, bossa nova, and traditional Japanese aesthetics, her work often evokes dreamlike soundscapes.
Since her 2010 debut, she has crafted a singular style centered on delicate nylon-string guitar playing and hushed, intimate vocals.
Aoba’s music is frequently aligned with folk pioneers Vashti Bunyan and Nick Drake, yet she remains distinctly her own artist, weaving intricate narratives that blur the line between fantasy and reality. Her recent releases, including Luminescent Creatures, showcase a deepening of her orchestral sensibilities and compositional ambitions hinted at in Windswept Adan (2020), incorporating lush orchestration and ambient textures while maintaining the fragile intimacy that defines her work.
Her nylon-string guitar remains central, but now it floats within a broader palette of woodwinds, strings, and gentle electronic elements. The arrangements feel organic, as if conjured from nature rather than constructed. Tracks like “Parfum d’étoiles” shimmer with impressionistic beauty, while others, such as “Dawn in the Adan,” recall Ryuichi Sakamoto’s more meditative works in their weightless elegance.

OKLOU
Released 7 February 2025
*****
Diverse influences merge in a cohesive and innovative album that contributes to the ongoing evolution of electronic pop music.
Oklou (Marylou Mayniel) is a French producer, vocalist, and composer blending classical training with electronic innovation. Originally studying piano and composition, she transitioned into electronic production, developing a signature sound that fuses ethereal vocals, ambient textures, and intricate beats. Emerging with Galore (2020), she quickly gained recognition for her emotive songwriting and experimental soundscapes. Drawing from classical music, R&B, and hyperpop, her work sits alongside artists like Caroline Polachek and FKA twigs. With Choke Enough (2024), she refines her artistry, merging delicate melodies with expansive electronic arrangements. Oklou’s music offers a deeply personal yet futuristic vision of contemporary pop.
Choke Enough showcases her ability to intertwine classical influences with modern electronic elements, creating a sound that is both ethereal and grounded.
Critically, the album has been lauded for its immersive production and headphone-friendly soundscapes. However, while the production is expressive, the lyrical content is secondary, with Mayniel's voice serving more as an instrumental texture than a narrative vehicle.

KEDR LIVANSKIY
Released 7 March 2025
*****
Integration of live instruments aligns her with peers who are redefining electronic music's boundaries, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking.
Russian singer, producer, and songwriter Kedr Livanskiy, known for her ethereal blend of electronic and pop music, emerged from Moscow's underground scene and claimed international attention with her 2016 debut album, January Sun, and subsequent albums like Ariadna (2017) and Your Need (2019). Drawing inspiration from '90s techno, jungle, and Russian folk, her music combines lo-fi aesthetics with haunting vocals, positioning her as a distinctive voice in contemporary electronic music.
Myrtus Myth departs from her earlier dance-centric productions and ventures into dream-pop territories, characterized by subdued tempos and lush, atmospheric arrangements. The collaboration with producer Flaty is pivotal, introducing live instrumentation that enriches the album's textural depth.
Thematically, the album delves into narratives of grief and mythology, drawing parallels to the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.
Tracks like "Zver" feature haunting saxophone melodies, evoking an '80s sophisti-pop ambiance. Livanskiy's operatic vocals soar over these soundscapes, adding an ethereal quality that distinguishes her work.
In the broader context of contemporary music, Myrtus Myth reflects a trend where artists blend electronic foundations with organic elements to craft immersive experiences.

ARBORESQUE
ARTEMIS
Released 28 February 2025
****-
Beautifully crafted and close to perfection for quiet listening, however this a safe set that seems to place few demands on the talent at undisputed talent at hand in the ensemble.
"Arboresque," the latest offering from the all-female jazz ensemble Artemis, is the product of the collective prowess of its members: pianist and musical director Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, saxophonist Nicole Glover, bassist Noriko Ueda, and drummer Allison Miller.
Each musician, a virtuoso in her own right, contributes to an album that is both a showcase of individual mastery and a celebration of cohesive ensemble interplay. The album opens with "The Smile of the Snake," a composition by pianist Donald Brown. This track sets a noirish tone, with Glover and Jensen's harmonized horns weaving over Ueda's sparse bass lines. The solos within this piece sustain a palpable emotional tension, drawing listeners into the album's intricate soundscape.
Original compositions by each band member further enrich the album's tapestry: Ueda's "Komorebi" transitions seamlessly from a Latin feel to swing, showcasing the group's adaptability. Jensen's "Sights Unseen" introduces complex vamps, providing a canvas for dynamic solos over a brisk walking bass. Glover's "Petrichor" offers a balladic respite, its bittersweet melody hovering delicately above a subdued tempo. Rosnes's "Olive Branch" infuses a samba pulse, adding rhythmic diversity to the collection.
The album also features thoughtfully arranged covers, including Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" and Burt Bacharach's "What the World Needs Now Is Love." Rosnes's arrangements breathe new life into these classics, with Ueda's bass providing a refreshing foundation for "Footprints," and the ensemble delivering a lilting rendition of Bacharach's timeless piece.
Critics have lauded "Arboresque" for its engaging compositions and the ensemble's synergy. JazzTrail notes that the album explores themes of nature and beauty across eight consistently engaging tracks, highlighting the remarkable artistic chemistry among the members.
However, some reviews suggest that while the album is impeccably professional, it may lack a certain spark.
The Arts Desk comments that despite the undeniable quality of the playing, there might be something missing, perhaps a spark, in this Blue Note release.

****-
With a sonic landscape that takes the listener on an intense trip and a humming voice that grounds the melodies and soothes like a soft blanket, 'Wild Around' is layered, textured, impressive, captivating and wholly unique.
With a unique and unmistakable approach to music and his instrument, Belgian guitarist Julien Tassin is a one-of-a-kind guitar player. Using non-traditional techniques and original tunings, he creates music that combines elements of blues, jazz, classical, Oriental and African music. The result is music born out of openness and freedom. 'Wild Around' is Julien Tassin's fourth solo album, built on the sonic and thematic foundations laid by 'Primitiv' (2022). Tassin was inspired by the wildness he saw around humanity, but also the wildness within, the inner and outer storms, the suffering of people and the refuge that music, tradition and a deep connection to nature can provide. 'Wild Around' is an ode to living in tumultuous times. Each song presents itself as an intimate dance of a musician and his instrument which makes the album a display of the deep connection between man and acoustic guitar. To preserve the raw and wild characteristics of the music, post-production on the recordings was kept to a minimum.

Chapter 1: Forever, For Now (EP)
ANOUSHKA SHANKAR
Released 6 October 2023
****-
"This chapter is about that feeling, being completely in the fullness and transience of a single moment, coming to forever – for now.”
Recorded at Berlin’s celebrated Funkhaus complex, the four tracks make up the first chapter in a trilogy of mini-albums written and released as an evolving story between tours.
Featuring guest appearances by Nils Frahm (piano, glass harmonica, harmonium, slit drum), Gal Maestro (bass) and Magda Giannikou (accordion), 'Forever, For Now' was produced by praised Grammy-decorated singer and composer Arooj Aftab, with whom Shankar had previously collaborated on ‘Udhero Na’, from the deluxe edition of Aftab’s ‘Vulture Prince’ album.
'Forever, For Now's dominant mood is set by the bewitching stillness of the opening ‘Daydreaming (featuring Nils Frahm)’, a fresh take on a traditional Karnatik lullaby. “I remember my mother and grandmother singing it to me as a child,” Shankar reminisces, “and one day last summer, while I was in the garden with my two sons and my sitar, I was strumming when one of my sons got tired and lay down in my lap. As I started finding this melody from my childhood, he fell asleep, and I remember trying to savour the beauty of the moment. This song is a snapshot of afternoon sun through leaves, roses in bloom, a child dozing on his mother's lap, the preciousness of a single moment fully lived and witnessed.

Compared to her earlier works, Chapter II leans further into ambient and electronic aesthetics while maintaining a deep classical grounding. The interplay of organic and digital textures recalls her collaborations with Nitin Sawhney and Karsh Kale but feels more distilled, with a refined emotional palette. The EP’s brevity enhances its impact, allowing each track space to breathe while maintaining cohesion. For listeners seeking virtuosic sitar performances, Chapter II may feel understated, prioritizing mood over technical displays. A Paradise In The Hold
YAZZ AHMED
Released 28 February 2025
****-
A showcase for Ahmed's technical prowess and her dedication to storytelling through music, offering listeners a rich tapestry of sound that bridges her British-Bahraini heritage with contemporary jazz innovation
Yazz Ahmed, hailed as one of the most influential trumpet players of her generation. An Ivor Novello award winning composer who makes sweeping epics that are rich with storytelling, depicting evocative ancient worlds and mythological muses. With her fourth studio album, A Paradise in the Hold, the British-Bahrani musician dives even deeper into her dual heritage and has come up with a treasure trove that draws on traditional music and stories from her childhood home. Ahmed writes for the voice for the first time, with lyrics inspired by Bahraini wedding poems and the yearning songs of the pearl divers. Deeply textural, expansive and full of potent performances, the album charts the heroic voyages of the jewel-hunters of yore, who sailed home through rough seas with precious cargo, and Ahmed’s own voyage of self-discovery over the past decade.
She moved to London with her mother and sisters in 1992 but says, “I felt like I didn’t quite belong and I didn’t know why that was. For a long time, I would lie about my heritage because of how Arab and Muslim people were represented in American films and British dramas. When I was at school, I never said that I was half Bahraini.” Music, however, helped to strengthen her sense of identity. She saw links between the jazz she studied at university and Arabian classical music, and started to learn Arabic. “I started to rediscover my mixed heritage,” she adds. “And that’s when I started to remember all this music that I grew up hearing but never fully engaged with.”
The collaborators on the album in particular, percussionist Corrina Silvester and the greatly missed giant of the jazz world and Yazz’s dear friend, drummer, Martin France, helped Ahmed to strengthen the connection between the two worlds; A Paradise In The Hold is a bold fusion that reveals its riches more with each rewarding listen. “It’s another step in my evolution of making music,” says Ahmed. “There’s so much beauty in Bahraini music. I hope this album gives people a flavour of how vibrant its culture is.”

Released 14 February 2025
***--
Although technically brilliant and exhibiting a deep musical rapport the chord-less format (no keyboards or guitars) while offering freedom, also presents limitations that may not resonate with all listeners.
Brooklyn-born John Patitucci is renowned for his versatility on both acoustic and electric bass, having gained prominence with Chick Corea's Elektric and Akoustic Bands and was also a core member of Wayne Shorter's quartet. Patitucci's extensive career includes collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Sting, and Bon Jovi, showcasing his adaptability across jazz and popular music genres.
"Spirit Fall" features Patitucci alongside saxophonist Chris Potter and drummer Brian Blade. This chord-less trio format, reminiscent of classic ensembles led by Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, offers both opportunities and challenges in harmonic and melodic interplay.
The album opens with "Think Fast," a high-energy piece that showcases the trio's synergy. Potter's tenor saxophone delivers urgent, angular motifs, while Patitucci's upright bass provides resonant walking lines and fluid solos. Blade's drumming adds dynamic shading, propelling the momentum forward.
"Pole Star" presents a more contemplative mood, with Potter's emotive tenor lines floating over Patitucci's intricate bass patterns and Blade's subtle rhythms.
The title track, "Spirit Fall," highlights Patitucci's six-string electric bass, employing lush chordal voicings that fill the harmonic space typically occupied by a chordal instrument. Throughout the album, the emphasis is on group interplay, with solos that are concise and serve the collective musical narrative. While the musicianship is undeniably exceptional, the absence of a harmonic instrument like piano or guitar places significant responsibility on Patitucci's bass to imply harmonic movement. This approach, while innovative, may leave some listeners yearning for a fuller harmonic foundation.

A sophisticated and meticulously crafted debut electronic music
Kassian is a UK-based electronic music duo formed in 2019 by Warren Cummings and Joe Danvers-McCabe. Their sound explores the realms of house, techno, and electronica, blending sequenced workflows with improvisational arrangements. Their debut album, "Channels," reflects personal experiences, incorporating live instrumentation and field recordings to create an introspective auditory journey.
"Channels," the debut album from Kassian, ventures into a fusion of house, techno, and Balearic beats. The album's seamless mix and thoughtful sequencing make for an effortlessly listenable experience.
Tracks like "Aeolian Harp" stand out with a funky bassline and airy keys, while "Invision" evokes a '90s house vibe. Contributions from cellist Timothy Kraemer and jazz keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones add depth and texture to the compositions. However, the album's commitment to subtlety and instrumental expression may not resonate with all listeners. The absence of more dynamic shifts or vocal elements could render some tracks less memorable. For instance, "Peech Blue" feels less developed compared to other compositions.

Perfect Strangers
LOPHAE
Released 7 March 2025
****-
The quartet's nuanced performances and thoughtful compositions are based on interplay between Sanders' guitar and Rapley's saxophone, as they weave intricate melodic lines over the solid rhythmic foundation laid by Herbert's bass and Brown's drumming.
Lophae is a London-based jazz quartet led by guitarist and composer Greg Sanders. The ensemble features saxophonist Sam Rapley, bassist Tom Herbert, and drummer Ben Brown. Lophae blends elements of jazz, soul, and global rhythms to create a distinctive and engaging sound, often tending towards the understated (hence their name, derived from low-fi).
"Greatfields," the title track from Lophae's debut album "Perfect Strangers," exemplifies the quartet's ability to craft catchy and rhythmically engaging compositions. The piece stands out as one of the most memorable on the album, characterized by its Afro-jazz sensibility and infectious groove.
The strength of the melodies on Perfect Strangers is indicative of Sanders’s intention to move away from the ‘performance piece’ realm of much of his previous work in favour of exploring the ‘songs’ end of the compositional spectrum: “I wanted to write tunes that could stand up 70 years later (like the Great American Songbook standards), be read off one A4 sheet by any musician anywhere, and be received and understood. I love music that is melodic without sacrificing groove, groovy without sacrificing sensitivity, harmonically rich without sacrificing melody or groove, floaty and ethereal without sacrificing intention and directness. I also love Ben, Tom and Sam’s playing on ‘classic’ repertoire, so I liked the idea of hearing them interpret my take on ‘standard’-style compositions.”

Crack Rock
CRACK ROCK
LATARNIK, ANTHONY MILLS
Released 7 March 2025
Crack Rock & Astigmatic Records
****-
Rather than leaning on nostalgia, Crack Rock broadens the yacht rock palette, injecting it with the same irreverent, genre-fluid energy that makes Thundercat and company so compelling.
Crack Rock, the self-titled debut from Polish producer Latarnik and American vocalist Anthony Mills, reinvents yacht rock with a spirit of experimentation akin to Thundercat and his Brainfeeder peers. It strips away the genre’s reputation for excessive polish while injecting funk, jazz, and hip-hop influences to create something far fresher.
Like Thundercat, Crack Rock takes inspiration from the smooth grooves of the ‘70s and ‘80s but refuses to be bound by nostalgia. Tracks like "Neck" and "Crack" feature silky basslines and falsetto-drenched melodies reminiscent of Michael McDonald or Steely Dan, yet the production is more unpredictable - filtered synths, angular guitar stabs, and hypnotic vocal loops give the music a modern, off-kilter charm.
Mills’ vocals are a key differentiator. Where Thundercat often leans into irony and surrealism, Mills delivers with a rawer, more soulful presence. His delivery on "Slow Burn" recalls both Anderson .Paak’s raspy swagger and the sensual crooning of Raphael Saadiq. Latarnik’s production, meanwhile, channels the loose, improvisational energy of BADBADNOTGOOD, particularly on "Gold Chain," where the groove bends and shifts unexpectedly.
The duo’s playful fusion of styles - yacht rock’s sleekness, funk’s rhythmic elasticity, and hip-hop’s sonic grit - makes Crack Rock more than just a revival effort. It’s an evolution. Some tracks feel like sketches rather than fully realized compositions, but the ambition is undeniable.

Never On Time
GARDEN CITY MOVEMENT
Released 19 July 2024
****-
The fusion of electronic and organic elements, coupled with heartfelt storytelling, that will please longtime fans and attract newcomers.
Garden City Movement is an indie pop duo from Tel Aviv, Israel, consisting of Roy Avital and Johnny Sharoni. They have built an international reputation for dynamic experimentation, performing at festivals like Glastonbury and Primavera by blending of electronic, pop and R&B influences.
Never On Time, the pair's sophomore record is a melting pot of funky electronic beats, dreamy melodies, and introspective lyrics. The duo describes the album as "our soul in sound form, a diary of our internal battles."
The title track, "Never On Time" exuding indie soul, establishes the album's overarching theme of human connection and personal battles.
"Summer Night," another standout, gained recognition as part of the official soundtrack for FIFA 22 - clearly for its broad appeal and infectious rhythm.
Collaborations enrich the album's diversity. "Spinnin'," featuring Ninet Tayeb, delivers an intense experience, with lyrics exploring the complexities of ending a relationship. The track's brilliance lies in its ability to juxtapose upbeat sounds with melancholic themes.
However, not all tracks are as innovative, occasionally adhering to familiar indie pop tropes. Despite this, the album's production quality and emotive depth compensate for these moments.
And big ups to those responsible for the album artwork for Never On Time: graphic design by Anat Gutberg and photography by Ben Palhov, both of Tel Aviv.

Dinner at Splenditello's
TEK TEK ENSEMBLE
Released 28 November 2024
****-
A bold exploration of musical fusion, adventurous spirit and technical prowess, unconventional and lively.
Rather than overwhelming, Dinner at Splenditello’s thrives on its lavish, anything-goes approach.
Formed in 2010, Melbourne's TEK TEK Ensemble is a six-piece band known for their eclectic fusion of bossa nova, surf rock, Afro-Cuban jazz, and spaghetti western scores. Through it all, they create an intoxicating blend of vintage flair and modern playfulness. Their energetic performances feature a diverse array of instruments, including trumpet, trombone, violins, percussion, guitars, double bass, and accordion.
Dinner at Splenditello’s channels the high-energy kitsch of 1960s TV themes and the new-wave absurdity of the B-52’s.
Tracks like You're My Maradona and Shut Your Mind & Lets Dance ooze with charisma, riding on swinging brass, sultry rhythms, and wry, theatrical vocals. The ensemble’s precision keeps their dense arrangements from becoming chaotic; instead, the layered instrumentation feels exhilarating. Like their influences - whether it’s Jean Garcia Esquivel's space-age bachelor pad exotica or the campy charm of early Blondie - TEK TEK Ensemble embraces maximalism with purpose.
The album’s biggest strength is its commitment to its own audacious world-building. The title alone suggests a cinematic dinner party soundtracked by a globetrotting band playing in a kitschy lounge, complete with dramatic swells, hypnotic percussion, and occasional tongue-in-cheek melodrama. The compositions feel tailor-made for a Wes Anderson or Quentin Tarantino soundtrack, balancing sophistication with self-aware excess.

A completely beautiful and original sonic work that should not be missed!!!!
Keanu Nelson is a young Aboriginal Australian artist from the remote but artistically rich community of Papunya, northwest of Alice Springs. He paints in the Western Desert movement style, and, on this album, sings poems from his notebook over minimalist DIY Casio beats programmed by Yuta Matsumura.

Keanu wrote these songs as private poems about family, home, and loss. He was finally inspired to sing them, make them public and loudly heard, after meeting Matsumura at the Papunya Tjupi Arts Centre. Inspired by the strong local gospel scene and reggae beats passed around the community via USB sticks, they created eight haunting, seering, lonely tracks, somehow familiar yet totally new, sung in both Papunya Luritja and English. UNDERWORLD
Released 25 October 2025
*****
Returning with the energy and production to match their early hists, Underworld's 'Strawberry Hotel' supplements dancefloor vigor with reflective depth.
Underworld, the British electronic duo of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, have been influential figures in the electronic music scene since the early 1990s. Known for their innovative fusion of techno, house, and ambient sounds, they've produced iconic tracks like "Born Slippy .NUXX" (1995) and "Dark & Long" (1994), blending dancefloor energy with introspective lyricism.
It has been awhile since the group's last release, the remarkable and well received "Drift Series" - a 7 Disc Box Set from a years worth of experimental music-and video sessions, with consecutive tracks and music videos released online on a weekly basis, between November 2018 and October 2019.
"Strawberry Hotel," their 11th studio album, again showcases the duo's enduring energy and creativity. Album-opener "Black Poppies," a hymn to embracing change, sets a contemplative tone but early tracks like "denver luna" and "Techno Shinkansen" soon deliver energetic beats reminiscent of their 1994 breakthrough, while "Sweet Lands Experience" offers a dancefloor-ready vibe. The latter half ventures into more abstract territories; "Burst of Laughter" features soothing synths and gentle vocals, and "Ottavia" introduces a lament delivered by opera singer Esme Bronwen-Smith, daughter of Rick Smith.
Karl Hyde's enigmatic lyrics shine throughout, particularly on "Denver Luna" and "King of Haarlem," where his stream-of-consciousness style adds depth to the compositions.
The album concludes with "Stick Man Test," a track that evokes a sense of finality and introspection.

KELIS
Released 7 December 1999
25th Anniversary
****-
Kaleidoscope didn’t just introduce a new sound—it laid the groundwork for genre-blending, reshaping how we experience R&B and hip-hop. A fearless exploration of sound that bridges the past and future of music.
Kelis, an American singer-songwriter, emerged in the late 1990s with a distinctive fusion of R&B, hip-hop, and electronic music. Collaborating with production duo The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo), she crafted a sound that challenged conventional genre boundaries, setting her apart in the contemporary music landscape.
Kelis’s debut album arrived at a time when the music scene was ripe for transformation, and she was ready to lead that charge. Blending elements from hip-hop, R&B, funk, rock, and jazz, Kelis, with the help of The Neptunes, reshaped the boundaries of these genres, offering a fresh perspective while honoring the sounds that birthed them. Tracks like “Caught Out There” became anthems not only for their emotional rawness but for their genre-defying energy, capturing the energy of a rapidly changing musical landscape.
Kaleidoscope is an album that boldly repackaged familiar sounds - hip-hop, R&B, and jazz - into something entirely new - an approach template that still resonates a quarter century later.
The album’s eclecticism was grounded in a deep understanding of musical traditions, from gospel to funk to disco, which Kelis intricately blended into a futuristic sonic palette. “Ghetto Children,” for instance, drew inspiration from Slick Rick's “Hey Young World” while incorporating the playful, experimental elements that would define Kelis’s sound. Likewise, “Roller Rink” took a psychedelic turn, offering an ethereal experience built on Al Jarreau’s smooth “No Ordinary Romance,” proving Kelis’s ability to blend the past with the future seamlessly.
Kelis’s work transcended conventional genre boundaries, paving the way for other artists to explore new sonic terrains. As a “foremother of Afrofuturism,” Kelis’s Kaleidoscope connected the dots between jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, laying the foundation for future musicians who would draw from these influences, from Beyoncé to Rihanna, Alicia Keys to Mary J. Blige.

Windswept Expansions
PHOTAY
Released 28 March 2024
*****
Traversing IDM, ambient-techno, and jazz funk electronic modes in unpredictable, undeniable ways,
Photay (Evan Shornstein) is an American electronic producer known for his intricate sound design, blending jazz, ambient, and IDM influences. His music often explores natural elements, rhythmic experimentation, and rich harmonic textures. A classically trained percussionist, he incorporates organic instrumentation with electronic production, creating immersive sonic landscapes. His work sits between the avant-garde and accessible, drawing comparisons to Floating Points, Four Tet, and Jon Hassell.
"Windswept: Expansions" extends the scope of "Windswept" his September 2024 release, offering two new compositions and a self-remix.
In it's original form "Windswept" was described as a nine-track sonic exploration of the wind as a "powerful, deep, unpredictable and at times overwhelming spirit.” The album blew away those familiar and new to Photay’s music, even being named the #1 album of 2024 by Juno Daily.
Now, six months later, Photay returns with Windswept: Expansions, featuring two previously unreleased tracks from the album’s surplus of exceptional sound. As its title suggests, “Jet Stream” steadily gains momentum before taking off into a propulsive techno ripper. Meanwhile, “Aeolian” leans into the producer’s penchant for electronic almost-pop, featuring a rare vocal lead looped into a melodic ear worm. These two new tracks appear alongside the producer’s own remix of Windswept’s standout single “Air Lock," bringing a new sheen to the album fave. The album remains focused on textural complexity, blending FM synthesis with organic timbres. Its dynamic shifts, though subtle, highlight Photay’s precision in sonic layering.
Of the songs added,“Jet Stream” builds on pulsating polyrhythms and layered synthesis, gradually intensifying into a kinetic electronic flow. “Aeolian” features looped vocal motifs and atmospheric textures, recalling elements of ambient-pop. The remix of “Air Lock” introduces new harmonic depth and expanded sonic space, refining the original’s interplay of airy synths and percussive elements.
While these additions do not drastically alter Windswept’s foundation, they offer valuable extensions that reinforce its aesthetic.

Released 28 March 2025
*****
An innovative fusion of jazz, funk, and dub showcasing Armon-Jones' multifaceted artistry.
Joe Armon-Jones is a London-based keyboardist, producer, and songwriter renowned for his contributions to the UK's contemporary jazz scene. A member of the BRIT Award-winning Ezra Collective, his work seamlessly blends jazz, funk, dub, and hip-hop influences. Beyond his ensemble performances, Armon-Jones has established himself as a solo artist and collaborator, working with musicians such as Nubya Garcia and Greentea Peng. In 2021, he founded his own label, Aquarii Records, to further explore and produce innovative music.
All The Quiet (Part I) marks the first installment of a two-part album entirely written, produced, and mixed by Armon-Jones. Part II releases June 13 and is already open for pre-order here. The project originated during the lockdown period when he delved into dub production techniques, drawing inspiration from pioneers like King Tubby. This exploration led him to build a home studio equipped with reel-to-reel tape machines and spring reverb, allowing him to experiment with mixing his solo and ensemble recordings.
The album traverses various genres, including jazz, funk, dub, hip-hop, and soul, reflecting Armon-Jones' diverse musical influences. Tracks like "Lifetones" establish a jazz-funk groove enriched with reggae-inflected rhythms and warm, summery synths. "Forgiveness" features understated vocals that meld into brass-led melodies, culminating in captivating saxophone and Rhodes solos. The interplay between structure and improvisation is evident, as the music transitions effortlessly from smooth grooves to experimental passages.
The inclusion of guest artists such as Nubya Garcia, Oscar Jerome, and Goya Gumbani adds depth and variety to the album. For instance, "Kingfisher" leans into Afro-funk, with Asheber's warm baritone complementing an unpredictable bassline, while "Eye Swear" introduces an experimental jazz-hip-hop fusion, featuring winding bass and shimmering keys that add layers of intrigue.

Only Dust Remains
BACKXWASH
Released 25 March 2025
****-
An unflinching exploration of mortality and societal critique through a fusion of hip-hop and experimental soundscapes.
Backxwash, born Ashanti Mutinta, is a Zambian-Canadian rapper and producer renowned for her confrontational and genre-defying music. Her work delves into themes of identity, mental health, and spirituality, often incorporating elements of horrorcore, industrial, and metal.
In 2020, she received the Polaris Music Prize for her album God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It, solidifying her position as a formidable force in the alternative hip-hop scene.
Only Dust Remains marks Backxwash’s first release following the completion of her critically acclaimed trilogy - God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It (2020), I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses (2021) and His Happiness Shall Come First Even Though We Are Suffering(2022). ThE album continues her exploration of heavy themes but shifts toward a more introspective and atmospheric sound, balancing raw intensity with moments of eerie calm.
Musically, the album exhibits a shift from her earlier, more abrasive styles to a sound that, while still dark, incorporates calmer, atmospheric elements. Tracks like "Dissociation" blend post-rock with hip-hop, creating a shimmering, ethereal beauty, while "Stairway to Heaven" offers a mesmerizing moment of existential contemplation.
The album's closer, "Only Dust Remains," serves as a reflective denouement, featuring a piano melody and choir that repeat "away from me," providing a strangely euphoric conclusion to the intense journey.
If Nina Simone was 33 years of age now, this is arguably the music she would be making. Like Simone, Backxwash uses her music as a vehicle for radical self-expression, challenging oppressive structures, and confronting deep personal and societal trauma. Clearly, the sonic landscape is vastly different - Simone’s signature was in classical piano, jazz phrasing, and gospel-infused vocals, whereas Backxwash operates in a space shaped by industrial hip-hop, horrorcore, metal, and experimental noise.
Simone would undoubtedly be pushing boundaries, perhaps embracing electronic and industrial elements, but she also had an unmistakable melodic sensibility and connection to jazz. Backxwash’s music is more extreme in its sonic aggression, but in terms of spirit, raw honesty, and cultural defiance, the comparison holds.
Inargably, Backxwash feels like a descendant of Simone’s legacy - carrying the same revolutionary fire but wielding a different set of tools.

El Roi
SULTAN STEVENSON
Released 28 March 2025
****-
A soulful exploration, with enough jazz to satisfy the head and the heart
Sultan Stevenson is a Canadian-born, London-based jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, blending a mix of traditional jazz, modern improvisation and Afrocentric rhythms - fast building a reputation on the back of his expressive playing and complex compositions.
One of the most compelling voices emerging on the UK and European jazz scenes Stevenson’s music captures listeners both within and outside the jazz community. Drawing deep inspiration from legends like McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Kirkland, and Geri Allen, Stevenson’s compositions are an exploration of faith, identity, and the complexities of the human experience. His signature style, rooted in quartal harmony, vamps, pedal points, and modality, is elevated by his natural storytelling ability.
El Roi is an ambitious debut that blends intricate jazz improvisation with subtle elements of soul, R&B, and Afrobeat - a vibrant fusion that never feels forced. Right from the opening track, Stevenson’s saxophone leads with emotional intensity, accompanied by tight rhythm sections and lush harmonic structures.
The record excels in its arrangement, particularly in tracks like “A Call to Worship” and “The Altar,” where the saxophone weaves seamlessly into a tapestry of percussion, bass, and piano. His band, featuring seasoned players, provides a robust support system, giving each piece a sense of organic flow.
Despite its technical complexity, El Roi remains accessible, with catchy melodies and evocative moods that engage both jazz enthusiasts and casual listeners. The production, crisp and clean, allows the intricate nuances of each instrument to shine.
However, while the album is technically impressive, it occasionally struggles with moments of predictability, particularly in the latter half where some tracks lean toward more conventional jazz structures. Still, the work stands as an impressive introduction to a promising artist with much to offer.

Earthstar Mountain
HANNAH COHEN
Released 28 March 2025
Bella Union
****-
A reflective and meditative collection emotionally nuanced music, though it occasionally leans on its own subtlety.
Hannah Cohen is an American singer-songwriter known for her ethereal blend of folk, indie pop, and electronic elements. Her haunting yet clear vocal style delivers emotionally resonant lyrics, while her music explores themes of growth, love, and introspection. Earthstar Mountain marks a bright and expansive evolution in her sound.
Earthstar Mountain is a warm and uplifting album that showcases Hannah Cohen’s clear, expressive voice, a key feature that distinguishes her from many in the indie scene.
The album is a love letter to the Catskills and in the interconnectedness of all things: in her past, present, future and alternative selves, in her friends –– here and gone –– and in the mountain that peers through her windows. Her vocal delivery, though not forceful, is full of emotion, striking a perfect balance between gentleness and strength. Tracks like “Wings of the Moon” and “Light of the Stars” radiate a sense of hope and beauty, with Cohen's voice cutting through the airy production in an almost celestial way.
The album’s instrumentation blends folk roots with a subtle electronic edge. In tracks like “Lonely Town,” the folk influences come through with acoustic guitar, but the electronic touches add an ethereal quality that helps the album feel modern without losing its intimate warmth.
While the album’s atmospheric nature could feel introspective, Cohen avoids becoming overly melancholic, maintaining a sense of optimism and clarity. The pacing of the album stays engaging, with enough variation to hold interest without straying too far from its peaceful, reflective tone. The production’s spaciousness allows Cohen’s vocals and the subtle musical layers to shine.

L'ocean de toi(Original Soundtrack Recording)
LANCE FERGUSON, THE BAMBOOS
Released 28 March 2024
Pacific Theatre
*****
This endeavor not only revitalizes L'océan de toi for contemporary audiences but also showcases Ferguson's versatility and depth as a composer, bridging the past and present through his innovative musical interpretation.
Australian artist Lance Ferguson, who has built his legend around his work with The Bamboos, Menagerie, and The Ferguson Rogers Process, has undertaken a remarkable new project by composing a new soundtrack for the 1981 French film L'océan de toi. This romantic thriller, directed by the elusive Leroi Alarie (biographical details are scarce), was long considered lost until a 35mm print resurfaced recently. Alarie, now 69, seized this opportunity to collaborate with Ferguson, aiming to replace the original score, which had been hastily assembled from library pieces due to budget constraints and never met the director's artistic vision.
Ferguson's composition is a collection of languid instrumental funk pieces that evoke the hazy, sun-kissed atmosphere of the film. Designed to reflect the aesthetic of the early '80s while incorporating a modern twist, the soundtrack seamlessly aligns with the film's narrative and visual style. The tracklist includes titles such as "L'océan de toi," "Dream Diary," "Prisms," "Green Eyes," "Rue de la Paix," "The Ocean of You," "Moonface," "The Swimming Pool," and "Vanishing Act."

IC-02 Bogota
UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA
Released 28 March 2025
Jagjaguwar
****-
"An instrumental journey through Bogotá, where grooves reign supreme."
Unknown Mortal Orchestra is a psychedelic rock band from Portland, Oregan, led by Ruban Nielson and known for their eclectic sound that blends lo-fi aesthetics with experimental elements. Formed in 2010, the group has gained attention for their adventurous approach, combining influences of funk, jazz, soul, and electronic music. IC-02 Bogotá, the second in the band's instrumental series, focuses on vibrant, groove-driven soundscapes that draw inspiration from Bogotá, Colombia.
Unlike their more structured studio albums, this release feels unshackled, with a focus on improvisation and exploration. The addition of keyboardist Christian Li and the involvement of Ruban Nielson's father, saxophonist Chris Nielson, contribute a fresh dynamic to the band's sonic palette.
The album offers eight tracks that blend rhythmic complexity with atmospheric textures. "Earth 1" stands out with its layered percussion and subtle use of Rhodes keyboard, setting a mood that is both reflective and immersive. The saxophone embellishments provide a jazz-like fluidity, enriching the psychedelic character of the compositions. The overall sound is smooth yet bold, with an infectious energy that is unmistakably alive in its approach to rhythm and harmony. The lack of vocals allows the instruments to take center stage, making the album feel like a narrative driven solely by sound.
The band's mastery in crafting hypnotic, groove-based music is evident, though at times, the tracks' repetitive nature can feel slightly meandering without a clear endpoint. The album, overall, is a compelling experience for those who appreciate instrumental exploration.

AARHUS JAZZ ORCHESTRA, MICHAEL BLADT
Released 28 March 2024
Jaeger Community Music
****-
Subheading:
Precision meets improvisation in a shape-shifting big-band experience.
Aarhus Jazz Orchestra is a prominent Danish big band known for its diverse and dynamic performances across a range of jazz styles, from contemporary to traditional. Michael Bladt, a skilled trumpeter and composer, joins the orchestra on Shapeshifter, a vibrant project that fuses modern jazz with intricate, experimental elements.
With Shapeshifter, the Orchestra seeks to push boundaries with a bold, contemporary approach to big band jazz, with Michael Bladt's compositional and trumpet work taking center stage. The arrangements throughout the album showcase intricate harmonies and rhythmic complexity, highlighting the orchestra’s impressive technical proficiency.
The opening track sets the tone with tight brass sections, while Bladt’s trumpet lines cut through with precision and expression. The overall sound is a blend of crisp, clean instrumentation and subtle experimentation, moving from sophisticated and tightly orchestrated passages to freer, more improvisational moments. The rhythm section provides a solid foundation, allowing the brass and woodwinds to expand into creative, often unexpected territories.
While the album’s broad jazz vocabulary is engaging, its complexity can be challenging for casual listeners, as the arrangements demand focused attention. Nevertheless, tracks like "Shapeshifter" and "Urban Pulse" stand out for their infectious energy and strong melodic lines. The orchestra’s balance between structured big band arrangements and moments of improvisational flair offers a nuanced listening experience.

Gratitude
SHAREL CASSITY
Released 28 March 2025
****-
Although this is a polished release from a rising star - and sublime in most respects - the album’s reliance on traditional jazz forms feels predictable by comparison with many of her contemporaries.
Sharel Cassity is a rising star in the jazz world after working with prominent figures such as James Moody, Roy Hargrove, and Wayne Shorter.
Gratitude, her third album, not only showcases her technical mastery and emotive playing but her ability to meld modern jazz with elements of soul and funk. Commencing with "Magnetism", the opening track, Cassity’s bold, melodic lines cut through with clarity and power, her expressive tone carrying the emotional weight of each piece.
Of the eight tunes, five are original compositions. The others are the Charlie Chaplin classic "Smile" and a pair of tunes "Suspect" and "Stick Up!" which are covers of songs credited to Richard D Johnson - a member of Wynton Marsalis’ Septet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
Throughout, Cassity’s playing (alto saxophone & clarinet), is at the forefront, backed by a stellar ensemble comprising
Cyrus Chestnut (piano), Christian McBride (acoustic bass), Lewis Nash (drums), Michael Dease (trombone), Terell Stafford (trumpet).
The rhythm section provides a smooth yet solid foundation, allowing the saxophone to lead the way through lush harmonies and inventive solos.
While the album is grounded in classic jazz traditions, Cassity’s contemporary voice brings fresh perspectives, balancing technical precision with emotional depth. However Cassity takes few if any artistic risks here, an approach that pales by comparison with many of her contemporaries.

Portrait Of My Heart
SPELLING
Released 28 March 2025
****-
An ambitious genre-spanning odyssey that both captivates and confounds.
SPELLLING is the stage name of Chrystia Cabral, an American singer-songwriter known for her eclectic fusion of genres, including art pop, soul, and experimental music. Emerging with her debut album Mazy Fly in 2019, she gained critical acclaim for her innovative soundscapes and emotive vocals, solidifying her place in the contemporary music scene.
In this, her fourth album as SPELLLING, Cabral transforms her acclaimed avant-pop project into a mirror, with lyrics that tackle love, intimacy, anxiety, and alienation, trading the allegorical approach of much of her previous work for something pointed into her human heart.
The album’s thematic forthrightness is echoed in its arrangements, making it the sharpest, most direct SPELLLING album to date. From the dark minimalism of her earliest music to the lavishly orchestrated prog-pop of 2021’s The Turning Wheel to this newly energetic expression of her creative spirit, Cabral has proved again and again that SPELLLING can be whatever she needs it to be.
However, the album's eclecticism, while showcasing Cabral's range, may also be its Achilles' heel. The amalgamation of genres, from metal-infused intensity in "Satisfaction" to the gothic undertones reminiscent of her previous work, results in a collection that, at times, lacks cohesion. This genre-hopping approach, though ambitious, can render the listening experience somewhat disjointed, potentially challenging listeners seeking a more unified thematic journey.

Correspondences, Vol. 1
SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE
PATTI SMITH
Released 3 May 2024
****-
From a collaboration with TBA21-Academy exploring the destructive impact of seismic airguns and human interventions in the oceans, to the resilience of Nature in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, to the decentralized societies envisioned by Peter Kropotkin, to the wastelands of Pasolini’s last night: the pieces presented become thought-provoking audiovisual journeys.
CORRESPONDENCES is an ever-evolving project between SoundwalkCollective and Patti Smith. Spanning over 10 years, it traverses a wealth of geographies and their natural environments, where the artists have uncovered sonic steps left by poets, filmmakers, revolutionaries, and the impact of climate change.
Soundwalk Collective’s founder, Stephan Crasneanscki, has explored, captured and collected the world’s remotest places in sound to awaken a sonic memory within the landscape, uncovering traces of past and current histories of the world we are living in. The resulting compositions are made of sound that reflect our relation to this world, the environment, the soul of our existence, and the creative process of the artist.
Initially composed as long travelling shots, soundtracks to an invisible movie, Stephan brought these recordings to Patti Smith, giving her new landscapes to channel her poetic vision. This ongoing resonance between the artists – which started during a chance encounter on a plane – has been shaped by their correspondences: ongoing conversations with the intention of reflecting on life and nature.

PATTI SMITH
Released 21 March 2025
****-
With CORRESPONDENCES Vol. II, Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith continue to meditate on great darkness and great hope, calling and responding to each other across distance, textures and time.
A bell ringing down through the years. “It’s changed my life,” says Smith. “So, I’m grateful.”
On the edge of the forest surrounding Chernobyl, a stone’s throw from the Pripyat River, stands the church of St. Elijah, the only house of worship still operational within the 1000 square-mile radioactive exclusion zone. There, in the courtyard, stands the Bell of Sorrow, which rings just once a year, at exactly 1:23am on 26 April, the moment when human history was forever altered, 39 years ago, as Reactor Four of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded, scattering its deadly, invisible poison throughout the land.
Ten miles northwest, at the centre of the zone, stands a much larger bell-shaped structure, a 31,000-tonne sarcophagus of concrete and steel, tall enough to entomb the Notre-Dame de Paris or the Duomo of Milan. Deep inside it, the nuclear fuel of Reactor Four still burns unstoppably, and will continue to burn for two millennia more, while outside nature thrives in the near total absence of human intervention.
It's here, where the natural meets the unthinkable, that the story of Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith’s CORRESPONDENCES continues.
More than 10 years in the making, the audiovisual project centres on eight pieces initially composed as slow, meditative tracking shots for unmade movies using field recordings painstakingly gathered by Collective founder Stephan Crasneanscki on journeys of discovery, inspired as much by the interface of humanity with the natural world as by the lives of the canonical writers, filmmakers and revolutionaries both artists admire.

ZACHARIAS S. FALKENBERG
Released 26 May 2023
****-
Utterly unique in their approach, Soundwalk Collective have delivered a gripping and thoughtful score, helping turn Goldin’s personal pain into culture-rattling impact.
Laura Poitras’ Oscar-nominated film ‘All the Beauty and the Bloodshed’ is an epic, emotional and interconnected story about internationally renowned artist and activist Nan Goldin. Told through intimate interviews, photography, and footage, central to the story is her personal fight to hold the Sackler family accountable for the opioid crisis. The film cuts to the bone with its incandescent celebration of life and condemnation of those who threaten it. Art and activism are one and the same.
Helping to interweave Goldin’s past and present, multi-disciplinary duo Soundwalk Collective soundtrack her personal and political struggles to sublime effect. The contemporary sonic arts platform of founder and artist Stephan Crasneanscki and producer Simone Merli, the pair work with a rotating constellation of artists and musicians, developing site-and-context-specific sound projects through which to examine conceptual, literary, or artistic themes. And for all the beauty and the bloodshed on show here, the duo strike the balance just right; their compositions in collaboration with Zacharias Falkenberg and Johannes Malfatti producing a trance that oscillates between grace and madness.
Art can change the world, which Poitras and Goldin tell us with powerful results. While there are multiple threads in this remarkable portrait which could have carried entire films, the soundtrack provides a sonic identity that helps keep track of proceedings.

PAUL B. PRECIADO
Released 31 January 2025
****-
Sonically ‘LOVOTIC’ is unidentifiable, artificial, and genuinely futuristic, occupying an amorphous androgynous netherworld at the borderlands between biotic and android. Traditional musical signposts are virtually non-existent, instead offering a mercurial, formless sound which mirrors the flourishing of gender fluidity it suggests could be on the horizon.
Inspired by a relatively new field of research that seeks to explore and develop the possibilities of sexual and emotional relationships – and even love – between humans and robots, ‘LOVOTIC’ interrogates the impulses, ideas, and needs underlying this phenomenon. The project ventures into a future where sex, intimacy and desire are reformulated through the connection of humans, robotics, and artificial intelligence.
In an age of such hybrid entanglement with the machine, human identity requires the construction of new forms of intimacy, gender, and sexuality. At present, however, such technologies are primarily used to produce programs of limited sexual iterations that do not question the preformatted categories of gender and sexual orientation. In contrast, on ‘LOVOTIC’, Soundwalk Collective ask whether the future of sex and sexuality could instead be an exponentially expanding kaleidoscope. Where does the impulse of preference come from? What sets of words from our vocabulary can be communicated to the AI mind to generate a new identity for desire? Could the machine be another technology that brings us closer together?
