Marshall Allen - New Dawn

New Dawn

MARSHALL ALLEN

Released 14 February 2025

Week-End Records

*****

“... the best thing ever, is the fact that Marshall Allen is about to release, at the age of 100, his debut album under his own name. There is no greater feat of durability, working at your craft, and putting your ego to the back of the room while you're supporting other artists and performers.” – Gilles Peterson

Two days after his 100th birthday, Marshall Allen started recording New Dawn, his debut solo album. A member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra since 1958, Allen assumed leadership of the band in 1995. Throughout his nearly seventy-year career, Allen has never released a solo album under his own name, and yet, instead of capping such a legendary output, New Dawn seems to herald a new beginning. A love letter to spacetime, it channels a century of musical intelligence into seven tracks, showing Allen at his most protean — freely moving from relaxed, transdimensional palettes to bluesy big band and beyond.

One of music’s vanguard avant-saxophonists, Allen continues to deliver durational feats during the Arkestra’s gigs. Still, the compositional energy contained on New Dawn is striking. Allen was approached with the idea of a solo record by Week-End Records’ Jan Lankisch. The Arkestra’s Knoel Scott — who has lived with Allen at the Arkestral Institute of Sun Ra since the 1980s — worked with Allen to pore over the archive of unrecorded material and develop this debut. Scott assembled some of Philadelphia’s brightest jazz stars as well as some Arkestra veterans for the sessions. New Dawn was then recorded over a couple of days in Philadelphia, with additional recordings added in the following weeks and months.

The title track “New Dawn” is the centerpiece of this impressive album and the arranger Knoel Scott wrote the lyrics himself. We are thrilled to have the incomparable Neneh Cherry, stepdaughter of legendary jazz musician Don Cherry, lend her unmistakable voice to this song.

Though greatly informed by the philosophy of Sun Ra and his Saturnian teachings — traverse jazz’s traditions, dig deep into spiritual geographies — New Dawn signals Allen as his own singular voice, one that’s swinging and bopping and reflecting into the future, with no sign of stopping. Week-End Records is proud to release this debut solo album by Marshall Allen.

The Weeknd - Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Hurry Up Tomorrow.

THE WEEKND

Released 31 January 2025

The Weeknd XO Music

Republic Records / UMG

****-

Closing out an artistic era for album, an album that has drawn a spectrum of critical responses, reflecting its ambitious scope and thematic depth.

Serving as the concluding chapter of a trilogy that began with "After Hours" (2020) and "Dawn FM" (2022), the album delves into themes of fame, personal turmoil, and artistic evolution.

Several critics commend the album's expansive production and cohesive narrative.

The Independent lauds it as The Weeknd's "most ambitious project," likening its seamless transitions and rich blend of electronic and R&B influences to a "feature-length film."

Clash echoes this sentiment, describing the album as a "sonic supernova" that consolidates various facets of The Weeknd's artistry into a cohesive and emotionally resonant experience.

NME highlights the introspective lyrics and genre-spanning production, noting its exploration of fame, pain, and transformation.

However, some reviews point to areas of concern. The Guardian acknowledges the album's captivating sound but criticizes its "shallow, self-pitying lyrics" and overtly theatrical tone, suggesting a lack of depth in its narrative.

The Times offers a more critical perspective, describing the album as "strangely suppressed and anaesthetised," with an 84-minute runtime that feels "stretched" and lacking in emotional impact.

Similarly, Stereogum notes that while the album is ambitious, its length and repetitive themes may detract from its overall effectiveness.

In summary, "Hurry Up Tomorrow" stands as a bold and expansive project that encapsulates The Weeknd's artistic journey. While its production and thematic ambition are widely praised, opinions diverge regarding its lyrical depth and cohesiveness. The album serves as a fitting, albeit polarizing, conclusion to an era, reflecting both the strengths and complexities of The Weeknd's musical evolution.

James Brandon Lewis - Apple Cores

Apple Cores

JAMES BRANDON LEWIS

Released 7 February 2025

Anti

*****

The album's improvisational energy, genre-blending compositions, and homage to jazz luminaries mark it as a noteworthy contribution to contemporary jazz discourse.

James Brandon Lewis has always been a saxophonist who refuses to color inside the lines, and Apple Cores is no exception. This isn’t just a jazz record- it’s a sonic manifesto, a bold fusion of the past and the future, steeped in the spirits of Amiri Baraka, Don Cherry, and Ornette Coleman. With Chad Taylor on drums and Josh Werner handling bass and guitar duties, Lewis crafts a record that is equal parts homage and exploration, a testament to the ever-evolving language of jazz.

From the first note, Apple Cores pulses with restless energy. The trio’s chemistry is undeniable - Taylor’s drumming is muscular and urgent, recalling the fire of Ronald Shannon Jackson, while Werner’s basslines slither and morph beneath Lewis’s searching, often ecstatic saxophone. Tracks like “Remember Brooklyn & Moki” exude an overcast Afrobeat sensibility, while “D.C. Got Pocket” swerves from Zamrock fuzz into full-throttle free jazz.

The album doesn’t just reference history; it bends it (and might even  make it, as it reveals itself with repeated listening). Lewis seamlessly weaves hip-hop rhythms and dub-like textures into his playing, creating a sound that feels both deeply rooted and utterly unbound. While some moments lean into chaos, there’s a method to the madness- the album moves like a storm on a fixed trajectory, deliberate even in its wildest moments.

What makes Apple Cores so gripping is its sense of momentum. Every track feels like a living, breathing entity, refusing to settle, constantly pushing forward. It’s an album that demands repeat listens, not because it’s difficult, but because its layers reveal themselves gradually. This is James Brandon Lewis at his most vital—fearless, unfiltered, and utterly compelling.

John Glacier - Like A Ribbon

Like A Ribbon

JOHN GLACIER

Released 14 February 2025

Young

*****

John Glacier's "Like a Ribbon" is a bold statement from an artist unafraid to traverse the boundaries of genre and convention. Her unique fusion of hip-hop, electronic, and alternative R&B, combined with a compellingly enigmatic presence, positions her as a formidable force in contemporary music.

Emerging from Hackney’s creative underground, John Glacier is an artist who thrives in ambiguity. Her music exists in a liminal space between rap, poetry, and electronic dream states, unfolding like fragments of late-night thoughts scrawled onto city walls. Like a Ribbon, her latest project, isn’t just an album—it’s an experience: atmospheric, introspective, and impossible to pin down.

Clocking in at a concise 30 minutes, Like a Ribbon is both cryptic and deeply immersive. Glacier’s hushed, deadpan delivery floats over a tapestry of beats sculpted by Flume, Evilgiane, and Kwes Darko, among others. The production veers between hypnotic electronica and lo-fi piano loops, giving the album an intimate, almost demo-like quality. Yet, every track feels meticulously placed, like loose threads woven into an intricate design.

Glacier’s lyricism is as elusive as her public persona. She glides between observations of parties, fleeting relationships, and moments of quiet solitude, always peering just beyond the frame. There’s a push-and-pull between the urban and the organic, as if the album itself exists in the tension between steel and sky. It’s this fluidity—the sense of a ribbon unfurling—that makes the record so compelling.

While its brevity leaves some ideas unexplored, Like a Ribbon is a hypnotic document of an artist in full command of her own mystique. It doesn’t demand attention so much as it beckons you into its world, rewarding those willing to lean in. John Glacier remains an enigma, but with Like a Ribbon, she’s crafted something undeniably magnetic.

Jon Batiste - The New Orleans Collection

The New Orleans Collection

JON BATISTE

Released 5 February 2025

UMG Recordings

*****

In The New Orleans Collection, Jon Batiste not only pays tribute to his heritage but also propels it forward, inviting a new generation to experience the magic of the Crescent City. It's a celebration, an education, and above all, a celebration of the enduring power of music to unite and inspire.

One of the highest profile musicians as band leader for the Tonight Show with Stephen Colbert, Jon Batiste's recent run of albums in the past few years includes the classically oriented "Beethoven Blues" (2023), a couple of movie scores "Saturday Night" (2024) and "Soul" (2020) and two collections of original compositions "We Are" (2021) and "World Music Radio" (2023).

His latest offering, The New Orleans Collection, is a vibrant homage to his roots, seamlessly blending the rich musical traditions of his hometown with contemporary flair. This album encapsulates the essence of New Orleans, weaving together jazz, soul, funk, and gospel into a cohesive and exhilarating tapestry.

From the outset, Batiste's mastery is evident. The opening track bursts forth with the lively energy of a second-line parade, brass instruments and rhythmic percussion inviting listeners to join the celebration. Batiste's piano prowess shines throughout, his fingers dancing across the keys with a joyful exuberance that is both infectious and technically impressive.

Collaborations abound, featuring local legends and contemporary artists alike. Tracks like "Crescent City Serenade" showcase soulful vocals layered over lush arrangements, while "Bayou Boogie" infuses funk grooves with a modern twist, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and fresh. The inclusion of traditional Mardi Gras Indian chants and brass band interludes further roots the album in its cultural heritage.

Favourable critics have lauded The New Orleans Collection for its authenticity and innovation, describing the album as a love letter to his city, capturing its spirit with a contemporary lens as it bridges the past and present and that it is as educational as it is entertaining."

However, others felt that certain tracks leaned too heavily on tradition, longing for more experimental departures and a deeper exploration of the city's diverse musical subcultures.

But Batiste is foremost an entertainer and - at least at this stage in his career - less a groundbreaker, so these points are minor in the grand scope of the album's achievements.

Eddie Chacon - Lay Low

Lay Low

EDDIE CHACON

Released 31 January 2025

Stones Throw Records

*****

Lay Low is a new milestone in Eddie Chacon's evolution as an artist. His ability to distill complex emotions into minimalist arrangements speaks to his maturity and the wisdom that comes with experience. The album invites listeners to reflect, find solace in simplicity, and embrace the journey of self-discovery.

Eddie Chacon, once half of the '90s soul duo Charles & Eddie, has embarked on a remarkable solo journey, culminating in his latest album, Lay Low, a collection that delves into themes of love, loss, and existential reflection, all while embracing the clarity that comes with age. This follows his impressive "Sundown" (2023).

Collaborating with producers Nick Hakim and John Carroll Kirby, Chacon crafts a minimalist yet profound soundscape. The album opens with "Good Sun," a tender homage to his late mother, where Chacon's soft vocals intertwine with gentle melodies, evoking a sense of bittersweet nostalgia. The title track, "Lay Low," offers a serene acceptance of life's unpredictability, with Chacon musing, "Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be." This introspection is complemented by the album's sparse instrumentation, allowing his voice to take center stage.

Kirby's influence shines on "Empire," the album's most upbeat track, featuring a glistening tempo and groove that provide a refreshing uplift. In contrast, Hakim's touch is evident on "Birds," a moodier piece enveloped in textured synths, where Chacon's vocals float amidst a digital fog, reminiscent of a soulful Bon Iver. This balance between light and shadow showcases Chacon's versatility and the seamless integration of both producers' styles.

Tracks like "Let the Devil In" and "End of the World" delve into apocalyptic themes, with Chacon adopting a preacher-like cadence, exploring the world's chaotic state. Despite the heavy subject matter, there's a surprising sense of peace, as if Chacon has made peace with the world's turmoil.

SH4RIFF

Released 5 February 2025

Orange Sound

****-

His sound is a fusion of cultures and eras, shaped by the haunting melodies of Malay music his mother introduced him to early on and the atmospheric depth of 70s British records his father often played on drives to school.

The only substantial English language information I have found for SH4RIFF is his Spotify profile, which quite accurately described him as "more than just an artist – he’s a craftsman".

It fleshes out his background, how he has been writing, producing, recording, mixing, and mastering his own music, since the age of 16, refining his skills with each release. His discography runs to 25 singles and 5 EP's since 2021.

This unique blend, combined with his affinity for 808s and digital production, formed the foundation of his signature dark R&B/Hip-Hop sound – moody, evocative, and deeply immersive.
Lyrically, SH4RIFF gravitates toward themes of love and heartbreak, though his artistry extends beyond romance. He occasionally shifts gears, creating uplifting, confidence-driven anthems with the same precision and emotion. His goal isn’t just to create music that resonates but to achieve true mastery – transforming personal pain into timeless, meticulously designed art that connects with listeners worldwide.

Ali is a dynamic three-piece musical project originating from Jakarta, Indonesia. Formed by John Paul Patton and Arswandaru Cahyo, the band aims to blend Middle Eastern culture with elements of 1970s Indonesian rock, cinematic soul, Afrobeat, funk, and disco. This fusion creates a distinctive sound that resonates within the vibrant Indonesian music scene. Notably, all lyrics are written in Arabic, reflecting the deep assimilation of Middle Eastern art and music into Indonesian culture.

The 1970s Indonesian funk sound serves as a foundation, intertwined with Arab influences that honor Cahyo's heritage. This blend aligns with the "habibi funk" movement, which melds Middle Eastern music with funk and disco. The band's music often evokes comparisons to groups like Khruangbin, known for their instrumental hybridity and cross-cultural appeal.

The EP draws inspiration from the intricate motifs of traded carpets, symbolizing cultural exchange and storytelling. This thematic choice adds depth to the listening experience, inviting listeners to explore narratives woven into the music. The tracks possess a cinematic quality, with compositions that could seamlessly score a film's evolving narrative. While rooted in the 1970s sound, Ali transcends mere revivalism, crafting something uniquely contemporary.

Luchii - GOO (Deluxe)

GOO

LUCHII

Released 16 February 2025

Perth Buds

****-

This is Indian Ocean chill-out music - as horizontally inclined as Cafe Del Mar, that layers hip-hop beats, tensile production and concise song durations, rarely exceeding three minutes.

GOO (Deluxe) is the most recent collection from this low-profile Perth (Western Australia) based artist whose online presence is practically non-existent - apart from a few lonely triplejunearhed entries from years ago.

However Spotify (and other media sites) carry an impressive discography of 48 individual releases - 10 Albums, 5 EP's and  33 singles - over the past decade, each one strikingly illustrated by first-rate neo-expressionist artwork that seems inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Just like his cover artwork, Luchii's brand of electronic hip-hop is collage: mellow sounds, wide-ranging themes (abounding with naturalistic, botanical and anatomical, themes), keyboard-driven, out of immersive production  and slow tempos.

CONSTANTINOPLE

Released 21 February 2025

Glossa

****-

With Nordic Lights in Persian Sky, Constantinople reaffirm their status as cultural bridge-builders, offering an artistic vision both grounded and exploratory.

Founded in 1998 by Iranian-born, Canada-based musician Kiya Tabassian, Constantinople is an ensemble dedicated to exploring musical dialogues between different cultures. Their music fuses Persian classical traditions with elements from the Mediterranean, Europe, and beyond.

Rooted in historical authenticity while embracing innovation, the ensemble often collaborates with global musicians, creating works that transcend geographical and temporal boundaries. On Nordic Lights in Persian Sky, Constantinople collaborates with the Nordic folk trio Dreamers’ Circus, merging Persian classical modes with Scandinavian folk traditions. Cymande - Renascence

Renascence

CYMANDE

Released 31 January 2025

Cymande

****-

Rather than a nostalgic rehash, Renascence feels like a natural continuation of the band’s journey. It reaffirms Cymande’s status as masterful musicians whose sound remains relevant and powerful, not as a revival act but as vital contributors to the evolving landscape of global funk and soul.

A true return to form and jewel in the crown of their iconic discography, Renascence picks up where their 1974 album Promised Heights left off – a spiritual and sonic follow-up, bringing a fresh modern edge to their iconic sound, which remains foundational to early hip-hop and funk scenes in the United States and UK.

Renascence tells the story of a band that never fully got its due back in the day; but are back to take the crown by remaining true to themselves – politically aware, and spiritually positive with infectious grooves.

The album's effortless musicianship - tight, interlocking rhythms, fluid basslines, and hypnotic percussion underpinning soaring horn arrangements and rich, layered vocals - make it compelling. The band's mastery of syncopation and call-and-response dynamics ensures that their sound remains as infectious and immersive as ever. Their jazz influences come through in intricate improvisational sections, while reggae’s laid-back pulse infuses the music with an organic flow.

The production is warm and expansive, allowing each instrument to breathe while maintaining the rhythmic intensity that defined their early work. While the album embraces contemporary elements, it never strays far from Cymande’s core identity—a deep, spiritual groove that transcends trends.

Stunt Records

****-

Looking Back features a classic hard-bop chemistry that is undeniable and irresistible. The ensemble is skilled in shining as individuals and as parts of a greater whole, with each member enhancing the others’ contributions.

In Looking Back, Scott Hamilton takes us on a journey through time, reflecting on a career forged by solo excellence and the bonds of collaboration. The seventy-year-old tenor saxophonist, known for his deep connection to the jazz tradition, has crafted a ten-track album reflecting his artistic journey and the many jazz giants and fellow musicians who have shaped his sound. Hamilton, alongside his Scandinavian quartet - Jan Lundgren on piano, Hans Backenroth on bass, and Kristian Leth on drums - delivers a set based on dialogue between musical friends. Their common jazz language allows the quartet to move as a unit, each player indispensable, each a flowing performance in the intricate hard-bop conversation.

The album opens with the ballad “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face”, but the musical conversation soon deepens for “The Maids of Cadiz,” Hamilton’s melodic lines are built with impeccable phrasing, creating an interplay that is about giving space

“Big Tate,” Hamilton’s original blues, then showcases the band at its most expressive and in title track “Tune Up,” the quartet embraces a more up-tempo swing.

“Shadowland” a waltz ballad, brings a different expression into the album, as the 3/4 time signature allows the ensemble to explore a more expansive soundscape,  making it a highlight of the quartet’s shared sensitivity and musical maturity.

Closing the album, “On a Clear Day” shifts the mood to a Latin jazz feel, delivering a performance that truly shines in its subtle interaction within the quartet.

Hamilton’s rich, warm tone and lyrical phrasing are at the forefront, but this is an album about the collective experience—about how each member of this quartet brings something unique to the jazz expression.

Organic Pulse Ensemble - Ad Hoc

Ad Hoc

ORGANIC PULSE ENSEMBLE

Released 7 February 2025

Puro Recordings / Playground Music

****-

True to its name, Ad Hoc embraces spontaneity and the art of being in the moment, with each track crafted using a Tascam four-track tape recorder.

Ad Hoc is the latest offering from Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustav Horneij, under his Organic Pulse Ensemble alias. Playing all the instruments himself, Gustav used this minimalist recording method to capture most performances in a single take, leaving no room for the digital safety net of endless edits. Instead, mistakes became opportunities, reshaped into defining features of the album - a process Gustav calls "problem-solving on the fly."

The result is a vibrant collection of spiritual jazz compositions, where modal grooves, layered percussion, and emotive saxophone and flute solos converge with Ethio-jazz and Eastern influences. While the album retains the meditative and exploratory qualities that characterize Horneij's work, tracks like Solid bring a funkier, groove-driven energy to the mix, adding dynamic contrast to the album's soundscape.

Released as a joint effort by Ultraääni Records and Puro Recordings, this limited LP pressing is a testament to Gustav's dedication to organic, soulful music-making. Ad Hoc is an invitation to dive into the raw, unpolished beauty of music made in the moment—mistakes and all.
