In a blazing alchemical ritual, Senyawa melt tradition, metal, and myth into a single searing vision of post-human Indonesia.

Senyawa is an experimental duo from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, comprising vocalist Rully Shabara and instrument builder Wukir Suryadi. Their music fuses traditional Indonesian elements with avant-garde sensibilities, creating a sound that is both rooted and exploratory. Shabara's dynamic vocal techniques, ranging from guttural chants to ethereal melodies, intertwine with Suryadi's handcrafted instruments, notably the bambuwakir—a unique percussive and stringed creation. Senyawa's work challenges conventional boundaries, positioning them as pivotal figures in the global experimental music scene.

In Vajranala, Senyawa embarks on an auditory journey that intertwines mythology, ritual, and the elemental forces of nature. Each piece serves as a chapter in a narrative exploring how natural phenomena have historically influenced societal structures and knowledge systems.

"Alnilam" sets the tone with celestial motifs, referencing the central star of Orion's Belt, symbolizing cosmic alignment. The title track, "Vajranala," delves into fiery energies, possibly alluding to the sacred Pawon Temple's alignment with astronomical patterns. "Kaca Benggala" and its sequel reflect on introspection and the human psyche, drawing parallels between ancient wisdom and contemporary consciousness. "Vajranala II" revisits earlier themes with intensified fervor, while "Hikmah" concludes the album, offering insights and reflections.

Indra Lesmana - Do The Math

Do The Math

INDRA LESMANA

Released 1 June 2023

InLine Music

****-

Indra Lesmana's ‘Do The Math’ calculates a bold leap into math rock’s cerebral groove.

Indra Lesmana is one of Indonesia’s most respected jazz musicians and producers, celebrated for decades of genre-crossing work from fusion and funk to orchestral and electronic projects. Born into a musical family (his father is jazz legend Jack Lesmana), he began recording professionally in the 1970s and built a global profile with albums like Children of Fantasy and For Earth and Heaven. Lesmana has also mentored generations of Indonesian artists and is known for his technical brilliance and sonic curiosity—traits that continue to drive his evolving sound.

Do The Math is Lesmana’s most unexpected and cerebral turn in years—an instrumental math rock record, released physically in 2023 and digitally in 2024. With bassist Ronal Adrian and drummer Ray Prasetya, Lesmana dives into a genre better known for its guitar bands than jazz piano virtuosos.

Math rock is built on irregular time signatures, sharp dynamic shifts, and complex rhythmic layering—think of it as post-rock’s more angular, puzzle-minded cousin. Here, Lesmana swaps bebop phrasing for digital crunch and odd-meter riffs, but his melodic sensibility never gets lost in the numbers.

Opener “The Classroom” clicks like clockwork, full of tight stops and interlocking motifs. “Galaxy Man” plays like Rush-meets-Weather Report, fusing cosmic synths and snaking basslines with tight polyrhythms. “Chasing Tail” swings in 7/8 time with playful elasticity, while “Simple Math” ironically deconstructs musical simplicity with twisting counterpoint.

What keeps this from becoming an academic exercise is Lesmana’s feel: despite the complexity, the trio grooves with clarity and flow. It’s a rare Indonesian math rock album that feels both technically daring and emotionally inviting—part tribute, part masterclass.

Reality Club - Reality Club Presents... The Show (Live at Balai Sarbini)

Detourn

THE SIGIT

Released 21 March 2013

Ffwd Records

****-

Reality Club Presents... The Show at Balai Sarbini offers a joyously theatrical indie-rock spectacle - equal parts emo nostalgia, choreographed fun, and millennial heartbreak therapy for the hopelessly self-aware.

Jakarta-based Reality Club emerged in 2016 with a mission to make sensitive indie rock that speaks to a generation raised on Tumblr quotes, Wes Anderson films, and late-night overthinking. Fronted by the effortlessly magnetic Fathia Izzati alongside co-founder Faiz Novascotia Saripudin, the band’s lineup has shifted, but their sound—a blend of melodic sincerity, crisp guitar work, and cinematic angst—remains unmistakable. With three studio albums (Never Get Better, What Do You Really Know?, and Reality Club Presents...), they’ve cultivated a loyal Indonesian fanbase and a growing international following. Equal parts confessional and performative, they thrive on stage, where their songs come alive.

Recorded at the plush Balai Sarbini concert hall, Reality Club Presents... The Show (Live) captures a band confident enough to stage its own rock cabaret—and charming enough to pull it off. This is no clumsy live cash-in; it’s an ornate, finely paced reimagining of their 2023 studio album, complete with swelling strings, piano interludes, dramatic lighting (we imagine), and the kind of polished spontaneity that only weeks of rehearsals can fake.

The live versions expand rather than merely repeat: “Dancing in the Breeze Alone” stretches into a theatrical waltz, while “You Let Her Go Again” becomes a gospel-tinged cry of resignation. Fan-favorite “I Wish I Was Your Joke” is greeted like a national anthem. A cameo from rapper Basboi on “The Rush Remix” spikes the emotional arc with adrenaline and comic relief.

Sonically, it’s crisp and well-engineered—no over-polished overdubs, just enough room ambience to make you want to shout along. This is a concert document for listeners who like their heartbreak set to choreography and their vulnerability in harmony.

Reality Club doesn’t just play a gig—they stage an existential musical. And, like all good musicals, you’ll leave humming the finale and questioning your life choices.

Balawan - Balawan Bumi Gamelan Orchestra

BALAWAN

Released 17 February 2022

BUMI: Balawan Untuk Musik Indonesia

****-

Electrifying Balinese tradition with jazz-fusion cheek, culinary jokes, and spiritual muscle—Balawan is a homecoming party nobody wants to leave.

I Wayan Balawan is Bali’s ambidextrous guitar maestro, globally renowned for his blazing finger-tapping style and genre-leaping virtuosity. A veteran of Indonesia’s jazz-fusion scene, he founded the group Batuan Ethnic Fusion to bridge electric improvisation with Balinese traditional music. With a double-neck guitar slung like a shaman’s kris, Balawan merges the sacred, the playful, and the profane, often blending lightning-fast fretwork with cultural humour and communal reverence.

His latest collaboration with the Bumi Gamelan Orchestra marks a bold return to his roots - not to rest, but to rewire tradition for the concert hall, the village square, and the international stage alike.

If Balawan were a feast, it would be equal parts temple offering, street food, and jazz jam session. With the Bumi Gamelan Orchestra in tow, Balawan doesn’t merely blend genres—he choreographs them, letting bronze gamelan and electric strings circle each other like old cousins at a wedding.

Opening salvo “War of Attraction” flexes both rock theatrics and rhythmic discipline, while “What’s in Bali Today” unfolds like a tongue-in-cheek travelogue powered by kendang drums, flute flutters, and sheer rhythmic joy. “Bangtiang Ngingel” and “Ririmemeri” turn ancient modes into playgrounds for melodic invention, and “Forest” sways with serene grandeur, like sunlight cutting through tree canopies in Ubud.

Balawan’s humour is intact: “Frog Fubkabilly” is a gleeful, frog-hopping romp, and “Mie Goreng”, perhaps the album’s most loveable track, turns Indonesia’s favourite noodle dish into a funky musical gag. “Take and Give” and “Nago” balance mischief with masterful dynamics, before “Klenyakcak Nok” closes the set with twitchy charm and syncopated glee.

This is not a jazz album in gamelan clothing, it’s something far rarer: a genuine collaboration between ancient forms and modern musicianship, full of heart, humour, and the conviction that tradition should never sit still.

SambaSunda - SambaSunda 30th Anniversary Live Performance

SambaSunda 30th Anniversary Live Performance

SAMBASUNDA

Released 25 March 2024

Gema Nada Pertiwi

****-

A genre-defying triumph: part Sundanese ritual, part stadium-scale celebration, where bamboo flutes, pounding kendang, and electrified kecapi chart a jubilant, spiritual, cinematic journey.

Led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Ismet Ruchimat, SambaSunda is Indonesia’s flagship ensemble for progressive Sundanese music. Founded in the 1990s, the group reimagines traditional West Javanese idioms (gamelan degung, kacapi suling, jaipongan) within expansive modern arrangements that flirt with jazz, ambient, dance, and cinematic scoring.

Ruchimat’s early roots with Gugum Gumbira’s Jugala Orchestra instilled a taste for rhythmic fire and theatrical flair. Over three decades, SambaSunda has become a global ambassador of Sundanese fusion, equally at home in concert halls, outdoor festivals, or open-air street processions. The 30th Anniversary Live Performance is not a retrospective, but a living, breathing monument to the band’s protean imagination.
30th Anniversary Live Performance is less a concert than a pilgrimage, with kendang, suling, and voices that rise like incense, SambaSunda throws down a two-hour masterclass in scale, drama, and joy. Opener “Kulu-Kulu” thunders to life with percussive swagger, while “Bubuka” serves as the group’s calling card: mystical, precise, a ceremonial summons to attention. The iconic “Bambung Hideung” stretches into a hypnotic 7-minute showpiece, as haunting as it is heroic. Mid-set highlights like “Dadalati,” “Kembang Gadung” and the cheeky “Ecek” show the group’s effortless swing between folk melody and contemporary groove, while “Topeng Jemplang” is a theatrical epic, extending nearly 13 minutes without flagging, all masked drama and trance-inducing rhythm.

In the final third, the Rachimot sub-group takes the stage, offering smoother, jazz-flecked ballads like “Start & Dream Wake” and “Sweet Lies”. But it’s the ecstatic drive of “Tong Tolang Nangka”, the soaring “Song of Mother”, and the transcendent encore “Song for Kuwu” that draw the journey to a close, both grounding and elevating.

KULKUL - Welcome To Bali (Instrumental)

Welcome To Bali (Instrumental)

KULKUL

Released 6 April 2017

demajors

****-

A shimmering instrumental postcard: part ceremonial processional, part sunset-chill compilation, where tradition and production finesse converge like waves lapping at a beachside temple.

KULKUL is a contemporary Balinese instrumental group, named for a drum tower in Balinese Hindu temple architecture, and led by multi-instrumentalist I Made Subandi, renowned for his masterful blend of gamelan with global grooves. While rooted in the ceremonial intensity of Balinese percussion (gongs, ceng-ceng, and kendang) the ensemble dares to incorporate cinematic atmospheres, downtempo textures, and studio polish without losing their ritual soul. Less fusion than dialogue, KULKUL aims to present Balinese music as simultaneously sacred and modern.

Welcome to Bali, their flagship instrumental album, avoids cheap exoticism in favour of immersion. It is an album designed as both a meditation on place and a passport for new listeners.

From the reverent opening strike of “Datanglah” (“Come Forth”), with its glistening metallophones and swelling ambient pads, it’s clear this isn’t your average tourism jingle. KULKUL channels the island’s layered sonic topography - temple bells, waves, scooters, roosters at dawn - into a focused, cinematic journey.

“Uluwatu” floats on plucked gangsa lines and gently rumbling gongs, building with hypnotic precision like a tide creeping up the cliff. The title track, “Welcome to Bali”, shimmers with hospitality but isn’t all postcard-perfect smiles—there’s tension beneath the surface, like a dance performed for unseen ancestors.

“Melencaran” injects percussive vitality, while “Bali Dance” does what it says on the tin, only it’s less tourist recital and more trance-state movement study. “Chandra” (“Moon”) brings a nocturnal elegance, rippling like moonlight on rice terraces, while “Mecanda” (“Teasing”) breaks the spell with a playful rhythmic flirtation. “Janger”, a nod to the gender-bending dance of the same name, is urgent and flirtatious. The closer, “Wina”, gracefully lets the listener down with shimmering restraint.

Neither fusion fluff nor folkloric museum piece, this is music for wandering minds and rooted souls. A triumph of mood, craft, and cultural care.

The Sounds From Minahasa (Duo Kolintang) transports listeners into the spirited heart of Sulawesi, where the Kolintang, the region’s iconic xylophone-like instrument, forms the backbone of a vibrant musical landscape.

“O Ina Ni Keke”, a traditional Minahasan lullaby, opens the album with reverence, as Dharmawan and Ferdinand Soputan's delicate interplay of marimba and Kolintang invokes a serene yet powerful atmosphere.

Throughout the album, Dharmawan and Soputan’s duo performance highlights their musical agility and intimate chemistry. “Tahanusang Sangihe” is a standout, where energetic rhythmic exchanges blur the lines between tradition and contemporary jazz, while “Oh Minahasa” feels like an anthem for the region itself—a proud celebration of cultural identity.

“Si Patokaan” adds a playful texture, its melodies dancing like the vibrant movements of a local festival, before “Ampar-Ampar Pisang – Cik Cik Periok” steps in, weaving playful, folksy rhythms into the modern jazz-infused framework.

The album's jewel, “Manuk Dadali”, a soaring traditional song about a bird, floats effortlessly between the grounded structure of Kolintang and the expansiveness of jazz improvisation. In closing, “From Indonesia With Love” encapsulates Dharmawan’s synthesis of his roots and the global jazz language—an emotive, introspective statement of cultural pride.

In essence, The Sounds From Minahasa is a bridge between ancient tradition and modern exploration, a mesmerizing testament to Dharmawan’s mastery and cultural reverence.

Airileke - Weapon Of Choice

Weapon Of Choice

AIRILEKE

Released 30 August 2024

Sun Eater

*****

A volcanic blast of Melanesian percussion, dubwise urgency, and resistance rhythms: fusing ancient log drums with digital fury and delivering a soundtrack for decolonial dancefloors everywhere.

Airileke Ingram is a Papua New Guinean-Australian percussionist, producer, and activist whose work fuses traditional Melanesian rhythms with contemporary global bass, hip hop, and electronic production. With ancestral roots in Manus Island and a career spanning from the Sydney Olympics to Yothu Yindi and beyond, Airileke champions music as both cultural revival and political resistance. He’s a fierce advocate for Indigenous sovereignty, and his label Makoda supports grassroots artists across the Pacific. On this, his debut solo album, he breaks genre boundaries with a fierce palette of log drum beats, militant lyricism, and deep-dub atmospherics.

From the opening bars of “7 Mile Dub”, Airileke lays down his manifesto: roots deep in Port Moresby’s gritty outskirts, basslines heavy enough to shake a parliament building. His weapon of choice isn’t just rhythm—it’s revolution. This is not fusion for fashion’s sake; it’s fusion as friction.

Tracks like “Jump Outa Babylon” and “Maintain the Guerilla Struggle” don’t just namecheck resistance—they embody it. Clattering garamut (log drums) and digital grime collide in a glorious sonic melee, while “Wanchef” and “Munum” channel ancient ceremonial echoes into club-ready beats. Think Lee Scratch Perry raised in a canoe house, armed with Ableton Live.

Then there’s “Death Metal Jungle”, a tongue-in-cheek banger whose title is equal parts red herring and warning sign. It isn’t metal, but it’s definitely deadly. “Bubu Billy” and “Bulanbiri” tap into more playful energies, offering respite from the harder-edged calls to action. And “FTP”? Let’s just say the acronym needs no translation.

The album ends, appropriately, with “Will”, a slow-burning vow to ancestral futures. Airileke doesn’t just blend genres, he bends them to purpose. Weapon of Choice is a landmark album in Pacific contemporary music, full of raw spirit, tactical beats, and unshakable pride.
