We celebrate the life of Glen Hansard (21 April 1970 – 29 July 2026)
The death of Glen Hansard in a motorcycle accident, reported today, is a tragedy for his family and close friends and a heartbreaking blow to the global music community. Glen was the songwriter's songwriter - a man whose talent for storytelling in music was as good as any.
His songs were so filled with life's narratives, that audio recordings and personal appearances alone could not contain them - they became the stuff of Oscar winning films and stage shows that appealed to multitudinous, universal audiences.
Hansard's career took many paths:
Nine albums and multiple hit singles between 1996 and 2015 with his famous rock band "The Frames";
Three albums (in 2006, 2009 and 2025) with Marketa Irglova, as the folk duo "The Swell Season";
Five stunning solo studio albums (from 2012 to 2023) as singer-songwriter of the highest pedigree;
Two globally famous motion picture soundtrack albums spanning soul music ("The Commitments" 1991) and Irish folk music (Once 2007), the latter revived in 2012 to become a successful Broadway and West End and global stage sensation, and
A career-spanning pair of live albums recorded over a two-night residency in Berlin entitled released in April 2026 - "Don't Settle (Vol. 1 - Transmissions East)" and "Don't Settle (Vol. 2 - Transmissions West)" - that will now stand as enduring documents to his artistic power and depth.
