Cockburn delivers a gravelly, late-career masterclass, breathing weather-beaten authenticity and timeless gravity into astute selections from the Great American Songbook.
Canadian singer-songwriter and virtuosic guitarist Bruce Cockburn has spent over five decades crafting a legendary body of work defined by fierce political activism, spiritual inquiry, and fingerstyle acoustic brilliance. From early folk roots to activism and and a late-career Grammy (for "Bone on Bone," the 2018 Contemporary Roots Album of the Year ), his prolific career spans nearly 40 albums. Now in his octogenarian years, Cockburn’s voice has acquired a rich, gravelly patina, a weathered instrument that carries the weight of a life fully lived. Much like Bob Dylan's late-career interpretations of standards ("Shadows in the Night" or "Triplicate"), Cockburn uses his aged vocal presence to uncover new, profound emotional depth in classic songcraft, the selections made from favourite songs, growing up.
The stripped-back arrangements produced by Colin Linden allow Cockburn's intricate, jazz-tinged fingerpicking to interlock seamlessly with his gravelly phrasing. Familiar classics like "As Time Goes By" and "I'll Be Seeing You" are stripped of sentimental gloss, recast instead with understated intimacy and quiet existential weight. Elsewhere, traditional blues and gospel cuts like "Buddy Bolden's Blues" and "Peace In The Valley" radiate a rugged, lived-in warmth. It is an unhurried, deeply moving collection that proves true authority in songcraft comes only with time.
