South London's drummer, producer, composer and DJ creates a transcendent, vocal-led tapestry of gospel-led, soundsystem driven exploration of the push and pull of faith.
Despite having previously released only one solo album, 2020’s Mercury Prize-shortlisted Dark Matter, South London drummer, producer, composer, and DJ Moses Boyd is already a legendary figure in modern UK jazz. A MOBO Award winner and co-founder of the seminal duo Binker and Moses, Boyd has helped expand the possibilities of British music, bridging hard-bop complexity with grime, afrobeat, and club culture. His standing in the community stems from a relentless commitment to rhythmic innovation and role model as label head of Exodus Records and periodic appearances BBC 1 & 6music broadcaster.
As noted in the Bandcamp entry for tis highly anticipated sophomore release, Songs For Sinners "A deeply personal body of work, it explores the push and pull of faith as something profoundly human – a force capable of comforting, dividing, unsettling and restoring in equal measure. Across an ambitious, vocal-led collection that fuses gospel, jazz, soundsystem culture, Caribbean rhythms, 808s and soaring choir harmonies, Boyd expands the language of contemporary jazz into something entirely his own. It’s a record that draws from the church he grew up in, the London soundsystem culture that shaped him, and the freedom of improvisation, asking what sacred music can sound like when it’s no longer confined by convention."
Across it's 12 tracks, the album demonstrates remarkable breadth: from the uplifting, welcoming choir harmonies of opener "Precious" to Zara McFarlane's radiant, joyful vocal turns on "Say Yeah," Chuck Strangers' grounded spoken-word reflection on "I Surrender All," and the majestic, powerfully swelling choirs of the final pairing of "It Is Well" and "I Believe."
The compositions shift fluidly from meditative sanctuary spaces to cathartic, club-ready energy, capturing both spiritual reverence and urban urgency. Rather than positioning his drums purely at the forefront, Boyd acts as a master conductor, balancing subterranean sub-bass and crisp acoustic percussion beneath radiant multi-vocal harmonies.
