Surabaya’s premier retro-lounge trio expands their palette, weaving gentle East Asian pop sensibilities into deeply porous, groove-laden soul.
Hailing from Surabaya, Indonesia, Thee Marloes are a soul and jazz trio comprising vocalist/keyboardist Natassya Sianturi, guitarist/producer Sinatrya Dharaka, and drummer Tommy Satwick. After capturing international acclaim with their 2024 debut Perak - a standout inclusion in our "Albums Of The Year" collection, the band has continues to build their reputation for lush, vocal-driven vintage arrangements and an effortless collective groove. Signed to Big Crown Records, Thee Marloes combine classic retro-lounge aesthetics with rich local textures, as one of Southeast Asia's most captivating contemporary musical exports.
Di Hotel Malibu, the band's sophomore release finds them subtly widening their sonic frame, but retaining their essential charm - the combination of Sianturi’s captivating vocals and the rhythm section’s tight-knit groove.
However, this collection feels lighter, more porous, and delightfully conversational. The shift here is nuanced yet distinct, fully embracing the breezy, de-stressed instrumentals and gentle vocal cadence characteristic of East Asian pop traditions over the last half-century. The result is music whose low-key grroove, retro-tone and genuine warmth ibnvites comparisons with international contemporaries from Khruangbin to Surprise Chef, but Di Hotel Malibu is as original in its origins and intentions as either of these - music that translates private reflection and home-spun social obseervation into an enchanting retro-lounge haven.
