Naarm’s groove astronauts capture the sprawling essence their 2024 world tour, expanding synthesised 80s prog-rock frameworks into a soaring 90-minute live universe.
Emerging as one of Naarm/Melbourne’s most internationally revered musical exports of the past decade, Mildlife have perfected a seamless synthesis of krautrock, space disco, and exploratory jazz-funk. Composed of Kevin McDowell (keyboards/vocals), Jim Rindfleish (drums), Tomas Shanahan (bass), and Adam Halliwell (guitar/flute), the ensemble has built a formidable reputation for their telepathic live improvisation and meticulous studio craft across albums like Phase (2018), Automatic (2020), Chorus (2024) and a previous live offering, Live From South Channel Island (2022). Live On Earth offers fans and new listeners alike, a monumental travelogue and multi-city tour memento, capturing the quartet’s kinetic energy on stages worldwide - well, in New York, Paris, Nashville, London, Boston, Denver, Miami, San Francisco and Mexico City.
Stitched together to replicate the pace and continuity of a live performance, the recordings capture Mildlife leaning decisively into live structural evolution. While their studio catalogue prioritizes vocal restraint and understated hypnotic grooves, these live renditions amplify vocal harmonies and group participation, a trajectory sparked on Chorus that blooms fully on stage into multi-part vocal arrangements. Musically, the ensemble pivots toward synthesised 80s prog-rock mechanics, stretching rhythmic vamps into soaring, synth-heavy epics laden with sweeping filter sweeps and soaring lead lines. The four-and-a-half-minute preamble ‘Ultrasound’ opens proceedings, setting the tone for the first set, before an authentic "we'll be back" announcement from the stage. Upon resumtion, after the intermission break, the album finds its beating heart in the ten-minute centrepiece ‘Chorus’, which establishes an expansive sound universe that sets up the remaining hour of music.
Though its 90-minute length and unrelenting groove format may prove exhaustive for casual listeners, Live On Earth offers dedicated fans an unreservedly generous document of contemporary psychedelic indulgence.
