A authorised, deeply expressive reimagining of Glass’s iconic minimalist masterpieces, centred around Camille Thomas’s luminous cello tone.
Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas is celebrated worldwide for her impassioned musicality, radiant tone, and adventurous recording projects. She is renowned for bridging classic elegance with modern accessibility, and has established herself as one of her generation's most captivating soloists. Joined by the Brussels Philharmonic under the dynamic baton of conductor Oscar Jockel, Thomas collaborates with composer to recast his hypnotic compositional vocabulary through the warm voice of the cello, allowing her to bring a rich synthesis of orchestral grandeur and intimate chamber performance to often metronomic works.
Created at the personal invitation of the composer, Philip Glass for Cello presents an expansive 21-track journey through his catalog. Thomas transforms Glass’s trademark motoric arpeggios into soaring, vocalic melodies, anchored sympathetically by arranger-conductor Oscar Jockel and the Brussels Philharmonic. Highlights range from luminous reimaginings of film themes like "The Poet Acts" (from The Hours) and "Truman Sleeps" (The Truman Show) to the haunting, dark intensity of the full Naqoyqatsi suite. Jockel and Thomas craft brilliant new voicings for Glass’s Piano Etudes, employing multi-tracked cello ensembles alongside full orchestral textures. Spanning the monumental Cello Concerto to the transcendent Symphony for Eight, the collection imbues Glass's rhythmic architecture with emotional nuance and lyricism.
